I talk to quite a lot of people suffering with Sjögren's syndrome, and quite a lot of them can't tolerate anything minty at all, turns out they have a reaction to the chemical carvone which is in spearmint, carroway, dill and other herbs. Could be a related issue?

Hi, I've been getting very small but intense ulcers on the tip on my tongue note for several months. It's sporadic and I ended up thinking that maybe it s something I was doing (or perhaps NOT doing?). The two things I seemed to have in conjunction before they arise was beer and gum (I always get Extra spearmint / coolbreeze). The timing is so on point I belive it is the gum but as another poster writes, I've been using gum for YEARS and this has cropped up in the last few months.
Now finding this forum I will stop using gum and report back in a few weeks with my results. I'm amazed that it can be this assuming that gum would actually cleanse your mouth and prevent such nasties???

I had to stop chewing mint gum months ago. Currently I have swollen rough patches inside my cheeks that scream with pain if I try to use toothpaste or mouthwash. I am using baking soda as a dentifrice and this seems innocuous but not as cleansing as toothpaste.Mint seems like poison as far as I am concerned. How could anything so intensely painful be beneficial? Why should I try to be that tough and use the stuff which causes me to actually scream and dance around with pain?I am not that much of a sado-masochist.

I hope some of you are right! I've been ill for several months (not related to the topic) but from the illness/meds I have had a dry mouth. I started chewing Extra Polar Ice gum thinking would help and my mouth has now been killing me for 3 weeks. I never connected it to the gum. As of this minute, the gum is in the trash.

I found this site, because i tried some peppermint breath mints and the next day developed mouth sores (or acid bumps). i was wondering if it was the peppermint in the breath mints? That's the only thing i can figure out. Other opinions would be appreciated.

I've had this a few times where tictacs in large quantities cause me to have a sudden, quite painful sore throat. This happened last night, but I don't know why. A few years back, I used to eat tictacs all the time and always had a couple of packets on me, no issues there. I've had loads of issues recently where I've cut foods out of my diet and when I try to eat them again I get quite ill, so it could be this. However, I've started to notice that my mint toothpaste makes my nose feel weird (like a cold) for a few minutes after brushing my teeth. Maybe it's a mint allergy, but for now, it's just another luxury food I have to avoid.

I have started to get mouth ulcers for the first time in my life. I had to stop chewing the extra Extra gum as I usually do. When I started again, more ulcers. I wondered if the gum or the action of chewing is to blame so have had a bit of an experiment and it seems the gum is now causing me to have mouth ulcers. Like Sally in this thread, I wonder if the ingredients have changed or if this is a spontaneous allergic reaction ? I feel sorry for people who get these ulcers regularly, they are nasty things !

Freakin hell, I ate a whole packet of Imperial Mints while driving long distance the other day and got a very sore throat. Did not make much of it at the time. It got better and about 2 weeks later I ate another whole packet while driving the same route and....the next same story! I will not touch mints again!

After using Extra chewing gum I always end up with multiple mouth ulcers. Any other chewing gums and mints don't have such a reaction so it's got to be something in the Extra ingredients.

Really? When I press peppermint eclipse mints onto my mouth ulcers behind my lip, it hurts like hell for two minutes before numbing the thing. I can even eat and talk normally again. The only problem is you get sick of peppermint after a while...

Yes I am on the 5th day of not being able to eat properly or speak from a large ulcer under my tongue from biting it while eating. I had eaten gum last week for the first time in ages and I can only think that the gum strips out the natural ”things” in your mouth that stops ulcers normally. Needless to say the pain is almost unbearable and now my throat is sore on the same side, and the tip of my tongue is burning (mainly caused as a secondary burn injury from not being able to drink tea properly as my tongue is too stiff)!!! :od

i too also see your point, however my theory was that there was a certain colour in all these lollies. I am a continual sufferer of mouth ulcers i dont think i have ever gone a month without getting one and when i get them it is always 3 or 4 at a time. I recently went on a road trip and while driving i like to eat allans minties. the day after i developed 4 mouth ulcers in my mouth and throat. Now they couldnt have been from stress because i was on holidays and it couldnt have been from lack of sleep because i was sleeping at least 9 to 10 hours a night. my theory was that the colour used in the ingredients was the cause but now i think it may be peppermint oil which is commonly used as the mint flavour.

I am currently suffering from two pain ulcers inside my mouth behind my lips. I have found the answer as to why I get them. I have tested this many times and ulcers always arrive as a result.
Whenever i use;
Chewing gum i develop an ulcer within 12 hours. Tested several times,
Polo mints, not as bad but due to my fear of halitosis i used a couple a day for two days only to result in mouth ulcers the day after.
I haven’t tried any other mints but to be honest i don’t want to!
Chewing Gum is by far has the worst reaction in my mouth and now since testing Polo’s i’m going to leave anything minty well alone.
I don’t suffer from mouth ulcers normally, only when i use gum, mints etc.
Ditch the gum and if you’re like me, lose the paranoia about bad breath!
