I have been trying successfully to sort out my mouth ulcers for the past 3-4 years. I know that everybody seems to respond better to one or combinations of remedies. However, I am convinced that these bastards need a bit of management rather than a cure.
I used to get mouth ulcers all the time in the past 3 years. They were big, unbearable and they made me miserable. I went through a process of elimination of food I take. I started with the obvious stuff - acidic food like orange juice, gluten food like white bread. But these didnít work. I tried rubbing vegemite on the sore but it didnít work and it was excruciating.
Finally I came across an article (sorry I canít remember where I read it) which said that foods that are high in arginine but less in lysine donít help with the lining of the inside of the mouth or something to that effect. I started eliminating high arginine foods and taking more high lysine foods. Funny enough most foods that are high in arginine come under the nut category - peanuts, cashews, etc. (coconut for some unknown reason is ok). As soon as I got rid of the tin of peanuts on my desk at work, my mouth ulcers almost disappeared immediately. They came back during the transition period but I just ate more meat and fish which are high in lysine and the buggers soon disappeared again. Now I donít eat any nuts or anything with nuts in at all. I have also tested it again and again with peanuts, almonds, etc. and true to it, I got mouth ulcers within 24 hours. IMPORTANT: ratio of lysine to arginine - the higher the better for MU; the lower the worse. Normally I donít eat any food with a lysine-arginine ratio of less than 1.5. So you can choose your tolerance level. That has worked for me for past 18 months. I hope it works for some of you.

Iím curious, lysine is well known to be useful in healing ĒgitsĒ but this is the first that Iíve heard of arginine as being detrimental. Arginine is necessary for the proper function of the pitituary gland
according to Earl Mindellís Vitamin Bible. This is an avenue needing more exploration. Has anyone else experinced such relief by reducing the amount of Arginine in their diet/ If so, please let us know.
Except for almonds and (I havenít reasearched coconut) the items you listed are also high in linolenic acid. What were the specific results when you tried the almonds, under what circumstances?

I concur with Ed, but, a very interesting theory nonetheless, definitely worthy of further investigation.

I presume that when you say you eliminated Ēgluten food like white breadĒ you also eliminated gluten food like anything containing rye, barley and oats, too. This includes almost every kind of bread, beer, soy sauce, many other sauces and gravies, many soups, breakfast cereals (also oatmeal), pancakes, pasta, scones, biscuits, cookies, cakes, pies etc., etc., etc.

I'm 43 and have being trying to sort our why I get mouth ulcers for about 15 years. Peanut and peanut butter certainly cause them for me. If I had to get guess as to why, it is because peanuts are not nuts but nitrogen releasing legumes. No other nuts cause ulcers for me. I've found that an over-the-counter allergy tablet - like Sudephed or Pseudonephrin (sp?) - when taken once per day for a few days, clears up even the most raging mouth ulcers. All the best to other sufferers.

I am also Mouth Ulcer Sufferer from last 6-7 years. After reading a lot on web regarding ulcers- its causes, treatments etc, I decided to give a try on tabulating my diet and doing the root cause analysis. I kept the same diet and started noting down the diet I had one or two days before getting mouth ulcers. Last month, i had noted down- peanut and coconut chutney, green gram dish and others. I kept in mind that these two could be the culprits. This month too, co-incidently I ate peanut- coconut chutney and green gram dish, on the same day and ended up with ulcer.
I gave a try again eating that chutney one day and green gram dish on other day. To my surprise, I got the ulcers when I ate peanut- coconut chutney! I searched green gram health benefits- it is supposed to be taken as a treatmnent for mouth ulcers! So, now I know the culprit of my mouth ulcers. I have decided to take off this chutney from my diet. Whoever is struggling with mouth ulcers, I strongly recommend them to keep an eye on what they eat while they get mouth ulcers...

I love beer nuts (peanuts with the skins attached lightly roasted and salted); with beer of course! Have had a constant mouth ulcer which was aggravated by toothpaste and I took to brushing my teeth with diluted mouthwash which seemed to help, but it still persisted. I stopped the peanuts - not the beer - one light beer at the end of the day (375ml) and also thinking that I was 'rundown' (maybe this feeling caused by the mouth ulcer), I also took one stress formula vitamin B per day for 3 days. Ulcer now gone. Not convinced I need the vitamin B, but stopping the peanuts seemed to do the trick.

Please Help!! I have gotten occasional ulcer here and there throughout my life. Nothing to worry about. 6 days ago I got a bad fever and the following day I noticed 3 ulcers forming. Now it's 5 days later and I probably have 20 something all through my mouth. I went to the MedExpeess and the doctor wasn't worried. He gave me ibuprofen, lidocaine rinse. And steroid paste. I'm just really worried. They're not getting better. Can't eat , talk, and barely drink. Anyone else hear of this?

Yes , I too find myself allergic to raw pea nuts that causes me ulcers below tongue. Well , I note that roasted pea nuts do not harm if consume some time but raw pea nuts surely do me problem. Similarly last winter, even in coolest month of January, I got mouth ulcers due to consumption of Cashew & Walnuts. At home ,I use almonds after soaking overnight in water and after removing outer skin so this never does any harm. My opinion is that all type of Dry fruit nuts should be used after soaking in water and roasted in suitable quantity indeed............ Surjit Singh Ahuja, Amritsar
