Mass outbreak of ulcers on lips, tongue & gums21 messages in this subject.
Last month I had this terrible burning feeling in my gums. There was a long white line along the bottom right side of my gums. It burned, stung, and was painful. I went to my dentist after a few days of having it. He told me has never seen something like that before, and sent me to an oral surgeon. I wasnt able to get an appointment with him till about a week later. By that time the infection, or whatever it was, was basically gone. He took an x-ray of my mouth anyway and found no infection, no abscess, nothing. All he found was that I need to have all 4 wisdom teeth taken out. the one near where my pain is, is coming is crooked, and is half out. A month later the SAME pain, the SAME burning and the SAME white line came back in the SAME area... It's worse this time though. Not only is it burning in that spot, the white leads further along the comes to where the end of the gums are. There is also burning and pain along the my lips, and my cheek too... I also feel some sores around where it hurts in my cheek, but they arent noticeable that much. So I don't think its canker sores. I went to a doctor yesterday about it, and he took a look and told me that he doesnt think its anything serious, and that he thinks its a viral infection, since it keeps coming back. He gave me 2 medications, and a medicated mouthwash. One for taking away inflammation and the other to destroy the bacteria inside my gums/cheek. He said that there are sores in my mouth (even though I can't see them, but can feel them) and that it should be gone in a few days (maybe a week) but i'm worried because last time I had this it was gone in basically 1 week... now I have it again, it's been almost a week, and I still have it...I started taking the medication last night so its been about a day and a half of medication... The burning along the base of my gums is going down, but the majority of the pain near my lips and cheek is still there, and cant really tell a big difference yet...or any difference at all. My cheek is sore to the touch, and my gums just burn no matter what... I also washed my mouth out with warm water and salt and it burned a lot. I dont know why its taking so long to go away, and im worried... he said I had herpetic gingivostomatitis. Any suggestions? Should I be worried? Will it go away? Does it have to do with my wisdom tooth?

Took medication cream to rub on face from dermatologist called aldara - caused virus attack inside mouth. Have several ulcers and raw lips. A also, had sore throat from ulcers and could not eat. On inflammatory steroid, still not helping much. Worst feeling ever - hard to sleep, hurts constantly , and produce tons of salvia.

I get these outbreaks frequently, though usually no more than. 5 or 6 at a time. It's caused by a virus, so there is no medicine you can take to get rid of it. Severe cases may include ulceration of other mucus membranes in the body including the genitals. And no, it's not necessarily herpes, at least not what I have. I've had these things since I was 10 years old. My doctor said people outgrow them, but I'm still waiting. My brother is 23 and he still gets them. Some cases, such as those that have never had them before, can be caused by allergies to drugs or latex gloves or something you've ingested. One option is to cauterize them with silver nitrate, but after about 2 you won't want any more done. The pain is unbelievable at first, but it kills the cells affected by the virus so instead of being an ulcer it just becomes a sore that doesn't hurt and heals quickly. If you have one or two big painful ones, I recommend it. Other than that, all you can do is rinse with salt water, take lysine, Take something for the pain, and keep your stress down. To prevent them, eat right, exercise, sleep, and don't get stressed out. Using a soft bristle toothbrush may also help since brushing your teeth slightly damages your gum tissue, allowing the virus to penetrate. The virus mainly attacks when the immune system is weak.

I'm in the same position. It hurts to brush my teeth , eat, drink. It sucks and the doctors can't do anything about it . So basically I should just rinse with mouth wash and salt water until it goes away?

It started as a few ulcers under my tongue and continue to spread all over my mouth. Sae a doc and there was nothing she could do as it was caused by virus, only prescrbed me with anti-inflammatory med. Told to use mouth wash regularly, ulcers eventually stop increasing after 2 weeks. Just have to hang on and it will be over. Rest more. Also, use salt water to rinse mouth instead of mouth wash as prolong use of mouth wash numb my tongue. Took quite a while to recoverfrom it too.

I've traced my mouth ulcers back to the handling of food with latex gloves, like salads or wraps, or other sandwiches. Salad the most, probably. Symptoms come on after 12 hrs. so it's hard to pinpoint. But, I started paying attention to the workers and I'd see them use the gloves. Like clockwork, I'd get a mouth full of sores by the next day. I take Benedryl now and they go away. So, be sure to consider allergies!

Hi folks- another reasons can be the Herpes Simplex virus that effects your mouth/oral cavity. They can be a sod as they always catch you when your system is low or stressed. Not much can be done unless very severe and doctor may prescribe acylovir but your body is telling you to take care and calm down and feed it well.

Layla, I'm in exactly the same position. Started with a sore throat though and thought it might be a cold starting, but it developed into a swollen tongue, ulcers and swollen gums. Doc put me on penicillin on Monday but so far its hardly touched it. I've lost 5lbs though!! Cold cup-a-soup with bread soaked in it for tea!! So painful and lack of sleep doesn't help. Can't think of anything that may have caused it although I have been stressed lately. Will go back to the Docs on Friday for more advice.

I, like probably most of you have recently encountered a mass outbreak of mouth ulcers on my bottom lip - which is now spreading to the top, also my Tongue is full of them and also my gums etc. I went to the doctors the other day because I had swollen glands in my left side, and all my gums are completely swollen and I'm finding it hugely discomforting as you can expect, I'm not sure what could've triggered them off because I haven't done anything differently. When I went to the doctors he provided me with a strong dose of penicillin, but I'm wondering if they will actually work? I can't even eat due to the fact I can't move My mouth and even certain things like fruit juice stings, I was just wondering how long they take to go, or if anybody can suggest anything? All I know is bonjela would bring huge discomfort, please help! I'm in absolute agony.

The past 3 times at the Dentist I have gotten ulcers. I have realized that I have developed an allergy to latex gloves. This time I also broke out in a rash on my chin. Basically I had a problem everywhere I was touched with the latex gloves.

I have three suggestions:
1) take at least 3000 mg Lysine a day--that clears them up for me in a much shorter time than usual
2) Test your alkaline/acid balance if you can get nitrazine paper from your chemist--itís cheap. To find your balance, put the nitrazine paper in your urine stream first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Let the flow go for a moment first then hold the paper under. Compare the color with the colors on the box. You might be surprised how far off balance you are! AND having the stress of dental work could be what set you over the edge as stress is acidic to the body.
I KNOW that if my body is acidic (too many carbs such as sugar, flour, sweets, cookies etc and not enough fruits and esp. vegetables) I WILL get ulcers and/or cold sores (theyíre similar). If you even think youíre acidic, take a teaspoon or two of NATURAL processed apple cider vinegar (none other will work). it puts your body into the proper acid/alkaline balance in just a few days. You can put it in water, add honey, put it in juice, make a salad dressing out of it-take it any way you can!
3) For pain relief with no side effect, put straight dry cayenne pepper on them with a cotton swab. Cayenne is both healing and pain relieving though I warn you, it hurts a bit at first.

If someone gets this many ulcers at once then you need to see a doctor. This usual means you have some sort of viral infection. You really should get more than 2 or 3 normal mouth ulcers at once.

Iíve suffered with similar outbreaks to Sarah and Paul and after much investigation and testing I think Iíve put it down to wheat and gluten - when I cut out wheat and reduce gluten (difficult as this is hidden in lots of foods) my ulcers are manageable. I also take accidophilus (good bacteria), vitamin b complex and 100mg of vitamin c. All of this seems to help keep them away.

Take soluble Berocca. If it works the same way for you as it did for me it will immediately take the sting out of the ulcers you have currently, heal them and also make you feel less run down generally. The trick is to keep taking it on a regular basis to stop new attacks. I can not recommend it more after the success I have had with it. You can buy it at most supermarkets and chemists.

Thanks Paul. Have been to see a naturopath & my G.P. & now think my ulcers are the result of a virus. Iíve just stopped breastfeeding my 8 month old son and I think my body is generally a bit run down - I guess itís a bit like getting ill when you stop working and go on holiday. Anyway, have now decided on a 2 prong attack of conventional medical pain relief in the form of defflam, natural pain relief in the form of Weleda myrrh mouth wash & then trying to boost my immune system with regular cups of Clivers tea with callendula drops and a supersonic vitamin & mineral supplement called Source of Life! So letís hope something from this cocktail does the job - watch this space!!!!

you sound as though you are in exactly the same position as me - i have about 15 or so of varying size everywhere in my mouth. Had them for about 2 weeks now and am in much discomfort too.
You mention about the teeth whiteneing - i found when i was younger that if dentists used latex gloves, i have a reaction to them and i would come out in ulcers a few days after my visit. They started to use gloves of different materials and found that stopped the outbreak.

I have suffered from mouth ulcers since I was a kid but never like this current outbreak - I must have about 30-50 ulcers ranging from tiny pimple sized to some about 5mm in diameter. They are covering my lower lip & gums and on the sides and under side of my tongue. Iím in agony and having to liquidise my food. The only thing I can think could have brought this on is having my teeth whitened a couple of weeks ago - any thoughts?
