STRANGE YOU/VE ASKED THIS QUESTION, I HAVE A WHEAT ALLERY AND ALSO SUFFER FROM MOUTH ULCERS FROM TIME TO TIME DO YOU KNOW SOMETHING THAT I SHOULD KNOW TO AVOID ANOTHER OUTBREAK?

|
I just read on the Allergy Society of South Africa web-site about coeliac disease that... recurrent oral aphthous ulcers are common and should arouse suspicion of the condition. p.s. THERE’S NO NEED TO SHOUT

I am gluten intolerant and have noticed that if I overdose on gluten, (about 1 serve 5 days in a row) i get really really bad ulcers. Try keeping a food diary. Stress is usually an added ingredient I need to add to the mix!

I would like to add that my outbreaks in mouth ulcers are much worse if I have been drinking beer/lager or eating bread or bread based things. I have never been tested for any food allergies but this has crossed my mind many times. I usually end up eating tasteless crispbreads as an alternative to bread but I am afraid there is no alternative to beer. I have my suspicions that my inflictions could be yeast based.

Yes, to follow on from this, I have suspected yeast as an allergy, however, when I mentioned this to a specialist in ulcers up at Guy’s Hospital, they reckoned that this was very unlikely .. (but possible I guess of course)
Whilst we are roughly on the topic of food allergy etc.. my Cinammon and Benzoate diet seems to be (touch wood) having a positive effect. . . Not that I am sticking to it 100 percent, but the two main things I have cut out are all fizy drinks (used to drink a lot of diet coke) and 99% of chocolate. My ulcers seem to have gone into remission somewhat since starting this diet, nearly 1 month ago now.. Interesting... I’ll keep you posted ... |

Great site! I recently cut out breads, (anything flour) and cut back on sugar (especially sodas) and am suspicious that these may be my culprits as well. (In addition to potato chips, oranges, chocolate bars, and tomatoes).

Mike,
There is a definite relationship between wheat and mouth ulcers (canker sores). Some people have a condition called celiac sprue or celiac disease.
Celiac disease, also called celiac sprue, affects about 1 in 200 Americans. It’s the result of the body’s inappropriate response to a protein in wheat, rye, and barley called gluten. This inappropriate response to gluten damages the lining of the small intestine. This damage makes it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients and vitamins from the food we eat. Celiac disease can occur in childhood or affect people later in life.
In some cases canker sores may be the only symptoms of celiac disease.
Often, however, canker sores occur along with other symptoms that include diarrhea at night, fatigue, weight loss, and iron deficiency anemia. Bleeding difficulties and osteoporosis sometimes occur as a result of the inability to properly absorb vitamin K and vitamin D. Your physician can perform an IgA tissue transglutaminase test or perform a small bowel biopsy to determine the presence of celiac disease.
Some people do not have celiac disease but still get canker sores (mouth ulcers) when they eat wheat, rye, barley or products that contain these. They most likely have a food allergy to wheat. (Their problem may not be with the gluten part of wheat but with another part of the wheat molecule). Over my past 6 years in helping people with mouth ulcers (canker sores) one of the most common things we have seen is people who get a mouthful of mouth ulcers after drinking beer - perhaps related to the rye or barley used to make it.
Hope this helps

FEAR NOT IAN! if its only wheat (not all gluten) thats the culprit you can drink budweiser with a guilt free,fear-less frivolty as its made with rice. for sufferers of yeast allergies i believe gin and certain vodka’s are free from sin.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease 8 months ago. Having gone on a gluten free diet I am now ulcer free!! I did have one bout lately when I ate something that I did not know had gluten in it. I immediately got 5 ulcers on my tongue. OUCH

i think i've narrowed my canker sores down to wheat too... or beer at least. had one beer saturday & today (tuesday) i have at least 3-4 cankers forming & like Hal.. they are on my tongue & on my uvula OUCH! i'm trying to cut wheat out of my diet as much as possible but i occasionally crave beer :( haha. it's a no-win situation huh. i heard you couldn't really be diagnosed with celiac unless you get the intestinal biopsy, that blood tests come up negative most times.
has anyone heard of ways to flush the wheat from your system? or know how long it stays in your system once you ingest it?? thanks for any help |

I think i am noticing when I eat bread I flare up with mouth ulcers. DANG IT i love bread. But i have also been taking b12, iron and Lysine i think the lysine is key to stopping the ulcers in their tracks, however i still get a bout when I eat bread.

I have been diagnosed as a coeliac since I first started eating so have no real idea what i am missing though know it can be a pain! When I have eaten products that say that there may be a trace of gluten in them, my mouth flares up in ulcers, it is so painful and I am inconsolale for days. I have discovered these products can sometimes contain as much gluten as ones which are not gluten free!
They now do a gluten free lager in tescos in their free from section so if you're desperate....it's worth a go!
I personally would avoid anything if it meant that I would be rid of these things! |

I am gluten-intolerant, and will absolutely get canker sores/mouth ulcers if I drink a Anheuser-Bush Budweiser. The only beer I drink here in the U.S. is Anheuser-Busch's Redbridge, which is gluten-free. For an interesting discussion about whether it is safe for someone who is gluten-intolerant to drink ordinary Budweiser, see http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art34379.asp

In addition to the canker sores, does anyone here feel like they have a virus or allergy symptoms? Or do you simply have cankers with no other symptoms? I feel like I'm coming down with the flu everytime I eat wheat and get canker sores. At first I was taking Zyrtec but no help. Then I started a Z-pack thinking it was a sinus infection. Now I'm convinced it's the wheat!

I am just awaiting blood test results for Coeliac Disease due to the connection with Mouth Ulcers, which, I have suffered with as far back as I can remember. Having 3 ulcers on my Uvula right now had finally convinced me that I needed to do something about it. I work in a customer face to face role of employment, and am now finding it impossible to speak to them due to the smell coming from my mouth, the increased saliva and the pure struggle to talk coherently! Does anyone also suffer bowel problems i.e.: constipation? I researched the connection with Coeliac and Ulcers......there is also fatigue, weight gain, depression, bowel irritability.....the list goes on!

Hi lisa,
I am also thinking of Coeliac Disease and I am planing to speak to my doctor for getting tested.
And yes... I relate to bowel problems as well.
For now I'll use lots of salt and teatree, both natural products work good for me but they only speed up the healing but do not prevent my ulcers from coming in the first place and from BEcoming as big as a fingernail grrrrr...

I get the ulcers after I drink a good amount of Budweisers. I have never had a problem with wheat, gluten, barley...etc. I guess I over do it with the gluten and thats what gives me the ulcers. Because like someone said earlier in this forum "wheat is not used for budweiser" So the gluten must be my enemy. I am also extremely fatigued and feel the flu symptoms. It sucks. Goodbye beeeeer. Giving it up for Lent.

If you have multiple problems beyond mouth ulcers and bowel issues, you might have an auto-immune problem. A lot of my issues get way worse when I ingest gluten, but for me, Celiac Disease was not the culprit...it is Behcet's Disease. I encourage you to look into this and discuss it with your doctor. I had so many various health issues over the last several years that family doctors just ignored or treated seperately and I could feel that somehow they were all related. Then, at the advise of a friend who is a nurse, I saw a Rheumatologist who able to diagnose Behcet's in 1 visit. Now with medication and gluten avoidance, I feel healthy as a kid again!

Gluten free means you can not have any wheat no way no how it can be in anything shampoo to beer to vodka gum butter sugar almost everything that you eat. You have to not eat it every all day for life so that you don't get sick. It's not like a diet today I diet tommorrow im gluten free. It's a diesase you have to not eat it everyday all day. We are used to looking at the labels to see what is in the item or to see if it is gluten free. Sometimes it will say right on it gluten free. Example yoplait yogurt Jello Crounty Crook butter. Also keep in mind you don't necessary have to have symptons in our case one was sick and could not figure out why. Her daughter was anemic and the doctor could figure out why. Finally she did the spruce blood test and find out she also was celiac.

After the birth of my daughter, I ended up with the worst recurrent mouth ulcers. I had two-three (or more) in my mouth at once all the time. Before pregnancy, I had them on and off since I was a child. Sometimes they were more frequent and severe, but I just dealt with it. For other digestive issues after pregnancy, I gave up gluten and the mouth sores disappeared entirely for months. Now I will get one if I have even a trace of gluten in something and it's very easy to notice. However, now I've gone grain free entirely for other reasons and I seem to get them again sometimes. I am thinking that the cause now might be peanut butter, pecans or walnuts. I would not have been able to sort this out without having given up gluten entirely and having been symptom free for a time.

Under duress I went for a meal in a poxy "trendy" bar, the least crappy choice on the menu was nachos so that's what I had. 45 minutes later I felt the burning and knew what was in store. 4 days later where there used to be mouth-skin between my lips and my teeth, on the inside, there is now a mixture of either no-skin or ulcers. What the hell do they put into industrial-catering-grade-food?

I just got rid of 11 canker sores under my tongue. You talk about pain, ugh! I hadn't had an outbreak like that since I was a kid and overdosed on Tang! I didn't feel overly stressed, but I had taken to drinking a couple beers (Wheat beer, of course) each night after work. After reading all these comments, I am convinced. No more Fat Tires!
