That should be ”about 50 years” not just 40 years.

Also, I’m pretty sure it is gluten (and possibly chocolate, too) that causes me to get canker sores/mouth ulcers. Another effect of ”gluten intolerance” is often anemia, and I had that for about 40 years until I ”cured” myself by going-off gluten. It wasn’t just a self-diagnosed anemia, either, because I had several doctors over the years try to pinpoint the cause without success and eventually give up. Within weeks of going-off gluten, my anemia was gone without a trace and hasn’t returned.

A partial list of foods which contain gluten: bread, crackers, cake, scones, cookies, biscuits, doughnuts, rolls, pie crusts, pasta, many sauces and soups thickened with wheat, soy sauce and beer.

It is possible to get some of these foods specially made ”gluten-free”. After 4 years off gluten I don’t miss most of the foods, and being sore-free more than makes up for doing without the foods.

Most wheat and grains contain gluten. However since gluten does not affect me, I feel that the grains also contain low levels of a certain oil, i.e. lenolenic acid, which in moderate doses does affect me, that may also be Tom’s problem.

so what else contain gluten ??

Amit, it was beer that was the key to my understanding that gluten was the major cause of my mouth ulcers/canker sores. (Not that understanding came drifting-through my fogged brain after drinking three or four pints of beer!). Beer is made from sprouted gluten-containing grains, and I can’t drink any beer at all, but it is worth not having the sores.

Coke, made from a bean, is like soy, made from a bean, a low impact ulcer provider. People like me who have a moderate tolerance for the ulcer toxin may drink or eat both without creating ulcers unless we over indulge or eat something else with a higher level of the toxin. However, after a short delay, we will experience digestive disturbances and in general not feel well. People with a low tolerance for the toxin will, of course, experience an ulcer; but, it may be a milder one because of the low level of toxin. I now indulge in neither.

Speaking of digestive disturbances, last wek I ate a pear, which is something I normally do not do. In less than an hour my stomach began to settle down and in a day some of the chronic swelling there began to lessen. I don’t know how long this will last or what other effects pears have but I assure you they will now be part of my regular diet. P.S. No mouth ulcers from pears.

I couldn’t talk a few days ago due to the pain myself =/

I started getting ulcers whe I started drinking Coke. Dont know if there is a causal relationship or not. I’m a teacher and I had to cancel a class today becasue I can barely talk........

Mark - that is my feeling exactly. I personally for me think that the body ”allows” a certain amount of things like Coke, general Fizzy drinks etc.. but have too much and I also get the same kind of outbreak.

It’s funny, I can vouch for both sides of this argument.
If I go over board on sugary drinks, especially colas and sodas I can guarantee an outbreak of ulcers within 48 hours. However while I have ulcers, peculiarly they are one of the few things other than water that I can drink comfortably, infact it often seems to take the edge off the discomfort...
My theory is that a cola a day doesn’t do any harm but as with everything moderation rules.

yeah I was a big pepsi drinker, once in a great while I may have one but now I drink green tea
the only things I cannot eat are pickels and pineapples and sometimes chocolate (not all the time) just sometimes..I can eat small quantities of chocolate
Gail 17 May 04
I am half-tempted to do just that! I stopped drinking sodas (all of them contain phosphoric acid) - to no avail. Tea seems to help the pain a little.

Hmmm, I do love my ’coke-a-day’, but if there’s even a chance that it’ll help prevent ulcers I’m willing to give ’em up. Thanks for the advice...
Think cutting out my tounge is extreme? (just kidding)

Its funny coke gives a kind a scock treatment for these ulcers.......but only for few seconds..and relives the pain for some time...but does’nt cure them...and i guess does’nt cause them either

Hang in there John. I also stopped drinking coke and it helped. Coke is made from a bean. i have eliminated all bean products from my diet including peanuts and soybean (note: canola oil is made from soybeans0.
