sinus drainage

Yes I think there is a correlation between post nasal drainage and canker sores. I am certain of this because of my own experience that the canker sores in my mouth always appear on the side where there is post nasal drainage. I use a netty pot with the packaged salt and sodium bicarbonate and drink a lot of water to thin out the mucous. It seems that the acidity of the mucous or perhaps organizms in the mucous are causing the canker sores.

Your sinuses swell back up th mucus gets thick n stops flowing freely. If they close up u have a cesspool in my dRs words. Organisms feed off stagnant mucus n change ph from alkaline to acidic, or overly alkaline! Also h pylori regurgitated during GERD can irritate sinuses. H pylori has been detected in sinus infections. Staph Strep, viruses all produce acid irritating mucus and some feed on yr tissues. Again, keep acid level down if u have GERD. One Antibiotic regimen may not kill a deep infection. Will do no good at all if it's viral. Main thing is to keep sinuses open, draining, mucus thin, and bring up th immune system. Swallowing th acidic mucous can even give you th runs.

If a bacteria called h pylori can cause ulcers on th stomach certainly one can cause them in th throat and nose. It's the same type of tissue! Can't believe Drs r so ignorant. I hav same problem. Gargle w peroxide. Flush sinuses w neti pot. Problem is deep seated sinus infection. Viral n bacteria can cause ulcers. Problem is which is it? I filled my sinuses w warm salt water held it in there n blew my nose out repeatedly. Try high doses of C n lysine w regular vitamins. Apple cider vinegar to thin th mucus. The problem is th staph tht lives in yr nose normally getting out of hand or any of a number of viruses or bacteria.

I have a 5 yo grandson that had a ear infection. It was treated with omnicef and claritin. Ear infection cleared up, then it seemed to look like he had tonsilitis in his throat. Typical ulcer looking spots on throat with drainage. I have taken him to the MD 4 times in 3 weeks. Strep is neg every time. He has yellowish/greenish drainage from the nostrils and is snoring lots at night right now. He has had a fever for 3 weeks on and off. He cried one morning just eating pudding. I am trying to find out if the ulcer like sore in his throat are related to the sinus and drainage or ear infection. The ear infection is now gone. Today is the first day he is feeling any better. He is now on another antibiotic. So does anyone have any ideas at this time.

I had a quick question for everybody. I suffer from sinusitis frequently, about once every 6 months. I had a mild case of it starting this past Thursday. I treated it with OTC medication and have gotten better, only a little sinus pressure now. However, when I was brushing my teeth this morning, I felt a pop on my gums where my sinus pressure is. Apparantly there is some reddening there and I burst a bubble, no blood though. Does this happen often? Or could this be an infection of my gums or an absessced tooth. I eat perfectly fine on that side of my mouth and I figured the pain on that side was from my sinus pressure.

I have almost cured my mouth ulcers overnight by using bicarbonate of soda (bread soda) instead of toothpaste and leaving some to remain in my mouth. I will be continuing to do this as I have constant nasal drip. Could be that it acts as an antacid. Here's hoping.

My husband has always had allergies with the constant drainage and sneezing. He also gets severe sores in the corners of his mouth, similar to cankers. We have no solutions for the allerrgies but hhis dentist told him to take vitamin b complex and his mouth sores go right away! Wuawlah! (He is also a snorer)

I personally have developed post nasal drip and sandpaper-like sinus membranes. My md said I had staph and gave me ointment I use twice daily now. It has improved but goes deeper than I can almost reach, the dry membranes is also a source of headaches and I have weird ear problems another md told me was nothing ?

I get canker sore outbreaks as soon as my sinuses start draining. I get a canker sores in my throat, on my tongue, on my tonsils, wherever. And whenever they appear, I get sinus infection symptoms right after. I figured they were related but haven't found anyone else with similar problems. It seems that no one here has posted any remedies or suggestions that seemed to work for them. If you have any suggestions based on results you had, please post them

I have suffered with chronic sinus infections and mouth ulcers pretty much all of my life. I never thought the two could be related. I have had scans and endoscopies before. They just come and go but for the sinus infections I have been on LOTS of antibiotics. I think that makes my immune system weak and it just continues.

I am so glad I found this forum!! I have suffered from allergies since I moved from Washington state to Colorado. I saw my regular GP, ENT, and allergist. I found out that I was allergic to 13 different things in my area. The onset is usually in August, and persists as long as we have cold, dry weather. It starts with cold like symptoms, and then my ears feel full, they pop and crack. The post-nasal drip is constant, and I get small puss filled spots where my tonsils used to. My right sinus seems to drain the most, and I developed a mouth sore on the back of my throat about three weeks ago. I am sure after reading these other posts that post-nasal drip is connected to mouth sores. I am ready to move back to Washington state where I never had this problem.
Kristine 15 February 13
I also have sinus drainage very bad now after having a very bad cold. I took a z pack. After taking it I have had an extremely sore tongue and mouth. No sores just burning and pain. It hurts worse when I eat salty foods or tomatoes. The doctor gave me medicine for thrush but I had no visible white spots which are typical with thrush. This is driving me crazy! I don't want to eat anything!

I have a sinus ulcer problem. I think so anyway. For several years I have had a "glob" break loose from my right sinus. It looks like mucus but will have a center. I have no symptoms but about every 2 - 4 weeks, it will break loose and drain down into my mouth. Sometimes there is a little blood. Sometimes not. It always seems to have a center or core. I do not have pain, fever or symptoms. Can anyone give me an idea of what it is or how to treat it to heal. I am a 64 diabetic type II female. Thank you

Yep, I get same thing, sores & swollen mouth. Then sometimes a sinus infection follows... Usually the mouth symptoms are my signal, a sinus infection is coming...

I just went to see an ENT & he said my throat looks fine! But it doesn't! I see red sores myself & it feels like sandpaper & very dry! He did a scope & said everything is fine-I have had this going on for weeks now & need some relief :( Any suggestions? I've been to countless doctors & no one seems to know what they're doing.

I have a mouth ulcer in my throat--maybe. Always occurs in the tonsit bed where my tonsil was removed. First occurrence four months ago after a stressful period. Dentist checked and said it was fungal or bacterial brought on by stress and would resolve. My husband is a Fp who works out of town. When he arrived home it was gone but returned in a week. I made a doctor's appt and it went away the day of my appt. Last week I returned to the doctor as not only do I see an ulcer, I see a bump. He laughed and said unimpressive minor mouth ulcer. I'm having my dentist look at it in a couple days. If it is truly stress related, the stress of not getting answers does not help. I smoked for many years and can't help but be worried. Going to try and get an appt with an ENT as this one does not seem to be resolving.

I also currently have a sinus infection and am on medication. Today, I developed ulcers on the inside of my lips. If you mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts mouthwash and hold in your mouth for a few minutes, it seems to clear it up quite quickly.

I got a cold back in January (2012) and was given antibiotics for mild tonsillitis. Ever since that time I have had intermittent sinus drainage. I have had an ultrasound done on my throat and the ENT scoped my throat. Nothing was found other than slight redness in my throat and esophagus. ENT suspected reflux problems could be causing mouth soreness. I took Prevacid for reflux but still have soreness in my mouth. I do not suffer from open sores or ulcers. It just feels like I burned my mouth with hot food or liquid. The pain is not bad, just uncomfortable. Does this sound similar to anyone else and has anyone found relief. By the way, I never suffered from allergies or sinus problems my entire life. I'm 48.

BTW remember to use Distilled water.... by this i mean water that has been previously boiled. This is just to ensure there are no bacteria etc in the water
Krishna 11 August 12
Try using a "netti pot". Just use warm water mixed with (iodine free) salt to clear out your nose when you wake up, and also before you go to sleep... I'm having Very bad pain on the roof of my mouth but it seems to be getting better... search on google, and give it a go. Also gargle salt water, doing your best to get the water into the irritated area. Use small amounts of water when you gargle, so that you can control it without it going down your throat. The reason it helps is that the salt water thins out the mucus, letting you clear everything out. For temporary relief right now, try licking honey with your tongue, and use it to "paint" the roof of your mouth. =)

I have been telling my doctors this for the last several years. About 10 years ago I had a surgery that they rerouted my drainage from by brain surgery through my sinus and ever since I have never had a stuffy nose but I have had horrible sinus problems including ulcers in my throat. They keep testing for strep but send me home because I have no fever and they say my throat looks fine. Finally one ulcer started popping up under my tongue and I was in tears trying to eat even yogurt. I went to the doctor and she again tried to tell me it was nothing. I showed her and she finally said that could be a problem I couldn't see anything. I told her about the sinus drainage and my theory about this affecting my throat. She denied it and ran mono, herpes test, bacteria tests, strep tests, Iron tests and allergy test. Nothing has come back. It is so frustrating. No we are back to taking vitamin D and getting more sleep and I am staying up tonight because as I type this I feel my sinus draining down my throat as it is numb because she gave me a magic mouth wash that is used for cancer patients to numb the pain. GRRRR.

unbelievable! i have had debilitating canker sores on my tongue for almost 5 years now, and NO ONE has mentioned this connection to me! i have been to an ENT (twice), 3 dentists, a GP (too many times to count) with no relief! now, the newest dentist insists that i have a biopsy of my tongue! this seems a little drastic to me. as if the canker pain isn't bad enough, i also have referred pain in my ear on the same side. sometimes it's so miserable i could just die. i am reading everything i can get my hands on to find a way to fix this.

I have never had a stomach ulcer nor does it run in my family. Just 4 months ago I was diagnosed as having an ulcer. Went on meds but not getting better. Someone told me that excessive sinus drainage can irritate stomach ulcers and I have MAJOR sinus drainage 24/7!! I asked my doctor but he just said ulcers take time to heal yet I know people who have been on Nexium for years. Anyone have my problem and any answers?

Yes, I have chronic sinusitis and have a sinus infection right now. I am also having so many painful mouth sores--on my gums, inside of lips, even on my tongue. I was looking this up to see if there was a correlation. Sure enough, I guess there must be. All I can do is put Orajel on all of them, but I end up having to make my entire mouth numb! No fun.
Hollie 2 October 11
I have been having the same problem for the last 9 months. I had a sinus infection last summer and was freaking out because I had all these mouth sores......then some blood blisters in the mouth that only seem to come about every 2 months. At that time the doctors told me to take claritin for fluid in my ears which I did not do. About 6 months later......my neck, ears and jaw hinges were in pain and my doctor told me that the insides of my ears were buldging and full of liquid. He recommended claritin and mucinex D which did nothing. I notice that every time I hold my breath and blow to pop my ears I get a little bit of drainage in the back of the throat and then out with a sore or two within a few hours later to a few days later. Lately there will be a funny taste and/or feeling when I run my tongue over the area but it can last only for a few hours or a few days. Sometimes it doesn't even pop out into a blister or anything like that. This is very strange to me. Also I believe my sinuses have been the cause very bad headaches upon waking up for over two years now. When I first start having the sinus problems I also was having a lot of hot flahes, like everyday.....now I get one every 2-3 weeks maybe...but my sister said they could also be related to my low thyroid problem.....who knows? But hang in there and take it day by day.

For the past three years, I have had the same problem. It has been a cronic problem. I suffer from sinus drainage that gives me a sore throat, and moves to my ears. At the onset of my sinus episodes, I wake up with mouth ulsers. This goes on 9 months out of the year, for the last three. I have never had a problem, up untill three years ago. I have been to three doctors, including a ears, nose, and throat. Does anyone have a solution to this problem. I find it hard to beleave, that after forty years of no sinus problems, that there is not something specific triggering this.

I have suffered with mouth ulcers my whole life and just now decided there is a correlation between drainage and sores. My whole mouth flares up if I have a sinus infection, cold, or allergy outbreak. I've also noticed sore break outs right after my period. Talk about kicking ya when you're down!
Sunnee (20) 27 October 10
judy those little dots on the side of your mouth could have been what the doctors like to call thrush try drinking warm tea with lemon and huny and for you moth cankers try SLS free tooth paste a anti histimne free nose spray will help withh allergys
candace 20 March 04
I suffered with mouth ulcers for at least 30 years. I have also always suffered with sinus infections. However, My mouth ulcers have decreased drastically in the last 5 years. I do not know why, but my point here is- that I still suffer (even more so) with my sinusís. The nodes in my throat constantly swell (like they are right now), but the mouth sores... I maybe only get them three times a year now. Thank God somethings better!
Tina (42) 28 January 04
I have been suffering from mouth ulcers and sinus problems for the last 2 years and seemed to start together way back then. They seem to me to be connected, Im going to try the L-lysine for the ulcers and see if it helps the sinus problem too. Will keep you posted.
Angie Bíham England 16 January 04
I never thought about sinus drainage and ulcers as being connected until now. I have suffered from sinus problems and ulcers for as long as I can remember. Maybe there is something to this idea.
Amanda 7 November 03
I thought I was the only one that felt like sinus drainage and the sores were related. My ear will fill with fuild not drain, I will have a ton of post nasal drip and get a sore in the back of my throat.
allyson 27 October 03
I have had and currently have painful mouth ulcers at the moment and just reading this has made me think there is a connection with my sinuses as I have been having really bad sinus pain and drainage over the past week. Iím going to maybe try and keep a diary of when I get the mouth ulcers and if in turn im having sinus problems just to be sure.
Sharon 24 October 03
Yes, Iíve had drainage twice in the last 3 months...along with sores in the back of my mouth and throat. Iím convinced theyíre related somehow. Gargling with liquid Benadryl is about the only relief Iíve found.
James 9 October 03
I am a chronic sinus sufferer. I also regularly get mouth ulcers. I have never thought there may have been a connection between the two before i read your message.

I have Stephanie. This last two weeks my allergies are really bothering me. My nose ran and my throat was scratchy which caused painful little spots on that back and roof of my mouth and the edge of my tongue. I never really got a bad outbreak, but my mouth sure was sore. I truley think sinus/allergies and sores go hand in hand.
Judy 3 October 03
Does anyone with sinus drainage notice a correlation to canker sore outbreaks? Although I donít have a sinus infection, I do get headaches and drainage, it seems that when I have excess drainage, my mouth explodes with canker sores. I was wondering if this is a coincidence, or if anyone else has suffered the same problem?
