L-Lysine

I have had mouth ulcers all my life. I started using L-lysine and they go away after one or two days. they used to last five to seven days. It isn't a cure but it sure does help! It has made my life SO much better. I also switched my toothpaste to SLS free and I do think that helps. Hope this is useful to someone!

My sister put me onto green Kiwifruit for canker sores. Eat one every so often during the day for a few days, canker sores DO go away quicker!!

I have had a sore on my tongue for sometime now. I just started to take Lysine 3xs daily 500 mg. Maybe I should go to 1000 mg 3xs a day. I have seen lysine ointment by basic organics. People use it for canker sores on the inside of their lips. Does anyone know if it would be safe to use a small dab on my tongue to battle this condition faster.

I've been getting mouth ulcers for maybe five years. I did IVF treatments and took steroids to dampen my immune system. I have a baby now but the immune system is still very low. I basically get any bug/illness that is about. A friend told me about this page. I"m going to try Lysine. Hope it works. I'm at the end of a bad bout of mouth ulcers and the pain has been difficult (understatement).

L lynsine doesn't stop me getting ulcers, but it has reduced the amount I get - give it a try.

My apthous stomatitis started at 17 and I am 41. If I don't take the lysine I get the ulcers in my mouth: gums, sides of tongue, palete, and inside of lips. I read not to take it for more than 6 months, I had been taking it for years and was symptom free for years. Stopped about 5 weeks ago and have had 2 bouts with mouth ulcers and now fever blister in the corner of the skin by my right eye. I'm going to take it again. But why the caution not to?

My son has always suffered from ulcers. I have never had them or my exhusband. I get cold sores. Lysine is fantastic for me with coldsores. You should avoid chocolate and nuts for coldsores. Back to ulcers, sorry, my son has a daily vitamin and eats a pretty good balanced diet, fresh fruit, a bit of junk, veges and not much soft drink. So i have come to the conclusion it's not a deficieny with food or vitamins. The doctor wants him to take a blood test, but my 11 year old won't do that. SM33 is this best cure we have found so far, its not a preventative but when an ulcer comes up put it on every 3 hours straight away and the ulcer doesn't get as big.

I also believe Ulcers are immune deficiency related and not really stress. I just got an ulcer on the inside of my cheek. It has been a few days, and seems to be getting worse. It started around the time I had my menstrual cycle. So, that's why I'm guessing it could be more immune related than stress. I haven't really tried anything to get rid of it though. I haven't even switched toothpaste. I will definitely will give this stuff a try and see how it goes.

Well.. I would, but it has been a week now, and they are WORSE and there are more of them (gone from 2 to 7). And Lysine is expensive here.. so, looks like I'm running out of "faith"..... No worries, I;m just one of the ones it doesn't work for........
Evelyn 31 March 09
evelyn, give it more time? and have faith! I am going to buy some today and hope that it at least helps me. ANY help would be a god send.

Lysine does not freaking work for me :( Been taking 1000mg each day for 4 days now, and my sores are only getting worse.

Hi all I see we all suffer from the same problem! I started suffering with mouth ulcers about 5 years ago after having my spline removed, so I think that ulcers are immune related not stress like everyone who doesnt suffer from ulcers seems to think. I've just ordered some L-Lysine so i'll give them a try and I'll keep you all informed on how I get on!

I have read all over the internets that L-Lysine supplements are the most effective treatment for canker sores. I have personally been using it for about 2 weeks and I have had great results. I had three persistent sores, two on the inside of my bottom lip & one on my tongue. The two inside-lip sores healed within 3 days and the tongue sore is healing quite nicely and the amount of pain in greatly reduced. The studies I have read about online have said to take 1000mg three times daily with food while a canker outbreak is occurring, and 500mg 3 times daily regularly to prevent cankers altogether. I have been taking 1000mg twice daily with food and will continue after the last sore heals.
L-Lysine is easy to find in any drugstore. I have been suffering from canker sore outbreaks since I was a preteen and this seems to be the best course of treatment and prevention. I also use SLS-free toothpaste, Glyoxide, and Prevention Everyday mouthwash in my teeth brushing routine.

Once I started taking L-Lysine regularly it was miraculous - no more canker sores. I also need to take a lot of Vitamin C to prevent the ulcers. 1000 mg. of each per day has keet my mouth free of sores for over a year; this after decades of having one or more mouth sores almost all the time.

Iím new here and Iím loving this site! I am 34 and a life-long sufferer. I recently got braces for the second time in my life (Ugh!!). The ulcers are here with abandon! Iím going to increase my L-Lysine intake based on your comments. I have been putting salt directly on the ulcers I currently have. I started as soon as they began to form. It seems to be cauterizing them so they arenít as tender and painful as they usually are. Has anyone tried this? If so, does this really help or only prolong their endurance?

You can take Lysine as long as you like, it is an essential amino acid. It would be better to get it in its natural form, in the foods which contain it. Pumpkin seed (Pepitas) are rich as are nuts and other seeds. All ulcer sufferers should be subjecting their diet to close scrutiny as they are most likely the result of a food sensitivity. Gluten from wheat products is the most common and known to cause ulcers with high intake are Paw-Paw and mangoes. Get yourself checked out for sensitivities and go from there. It could change your life.

get ur horse tranks from HOLLAND AND BARRETT. I bought the SUPER ONE multi vitamin tablets also, big fookers they are. i chop them into 4 quarters, this makes it easier to swallow, also better to swallow with a mouth full of food. i tested this with LYSINE, and in separate occasions on its own, where it had no affect on the ulcer, so i tried just hte SUPER ONE. and that seemed to have more effect than the LYSIDE. so its up to you guys. try one or the other, if not both. works for me. STAMP out those annoying ulcer cretins. :)

I am currenlty working 9pm till 2am at the moment and being a sufferer of ulcers, I have found that I have not been 2 months without a ulcer in some part of my mouth, as soon as I get rid of one another one comes the pain is driving me insane at the moment. I am usin bonjella and Kenalog, the kenalog relieves the pain and stops me from waking up, it does not last long though and it does leave a sticky substance all over the area of the ulcer (it is not nice). I have never herd of L-Lysine I will have to give that a go. It would be nice to find a product to help get rid of this problem.
Amie-Jo 12 November 03

Kate 10 November 03
I just had gotten rid of some ulcers and then the start of one under my tongue,I took L-lysine and acidophilus as well and it went away
L-lysine saids caution....do not take more than 6 months at a time..donít know the reason why..
Gail 10 November 03
Are there any side effects associated with L-Lysine?
Kate 10 November 03
Brad, why should you only take lysine for 6 months ?
Dom Walton 30 October 03
Having just had the worst outbreak of ulcers for the past couple of years (ten big ones...ouch), I tried L-Lysine for the first time. I took three 1000mg tablets (from holland and Barrett) a day and within a couple of days the majority of the pain had gone. While they were still there, they werenít nearly as painful and I was able to start talking again! It defintely helped to speed up the recovery. I would highly recommend it, as well as lots of vitamin B-Complex.
Michaela 29 October 03
It is my understanding that one should only take L-Lysine for 6 months at a time.

Lysine works for me - I was getting about 100 small ulcers on my tongue and inside my mouth about every 3 weeks - now when I get that first tingle, I take Lysine and it goes away - its fantastic! I havent had a serious attack since I started taking Lysine - give it a try!
17 March 03
There may be a negative long term side effect from taking L-Lysine for extended periods of time. Does anyone know how long you should take this.

L-lysine is in any herb section at Walmart or wherever.

I have just read something about lysine helping ulcers. Where can you get it? From the chemist???

My son who is 12 has been suffering with major ulcers for about 2 years now. Of course we donít know why he gets them (I believe nerves) but any how...we have found if he notices an ulcer starting he takes to L-Lysine tablets right away and then 3 or 4 through that the day. He them continues to take one to two tablets for the next couple of days and the ulcers dimish. L-Lysine does not help the pain but does seem to take the ulcers away. I now have him taking a L-Lysine tablet once every morning and we are going to see if this regime holds them at bay.
