No Mouth Ulcers for 4 months25 messages in this subject.
Iíve recently gone 4 months without mouth ulcers, something that hasínt occurred as far back as I can remember. Iím 45 now and have been having mouth ulcers since I was about 14. Recently I got really tired of having a mouth ulcer or two every few weeks, so I put my foot down and decided to change a few things. Nearly all of my ulcers result from me biting my mouth/tongue or crunching something sharp, but I also suspected the tomato factor, after visiting this website. My new approach was to try to avoid being distracted during mealtimes, eat more slowly and, if possible, not talk and eat at the same time. In addition I now never eat sharp boiled sweets or toast. Iíve also cut out tomatoes completely and have started drinking a daily dose of this ígood bacteriaí Yakult stuff.
I also try to completely avoid ever putting my fingers in my mouth as the slightest graze from a fingernail used to cause an ulcer. As I say, Iíve now gone 4 months with no ulcers, but Iím not sure which the most important factor of the above items is......
I donít recall biting my mouth/tongue recently, so maybe itís just that Iím eating much more carefully and pretty boring company at the meal table......?
But, whatever, the last 4 months have been a major breakthrough, whatever the precise solution is.......
Itís the first time I can ever remember going months without buying more Frador/Adcortyl/Rinstead medication...

Hi Martin, interesting study, I hope you keep them at bay. Yakult is another one of those probiotic yoghurt supplement things - they crop up often as beneficial, other probiotic supplements (I think) include Actimel, Multibionta and natural yoghurt.

Cant say iíve ever noticed any tomato links with my ulcers.... but since i started taking l-lysine 4 weeks ago, i havenít had a single ulcer. Also, natural live yoghurt contains the same beneficial bacteria as all the brand name probiotic health drinks and is much cheaper, I have it on its own, on curry or mixed with juice just cos it tastes nice =) The whole yoghurt/probiotic thing is basically about bolstering the immune system - healthy gut = healthy body...

Monkey, did your ulcers disapear as soon as you started taking l-lysine? I started taking it about five days ago- no noticable results yet- so just wondering how long I might need to wait to tell if its working? Also, what dosage do you recommend? Thanks
Alice (UK) 8 July 03
I had 2 real big ulcers when i started taking lysine, they went within 1 week, which is about normal for my ulcers anyway but the main thing is i havent had a single 1, not even the threat of 1 since.Dosage-wise, iím taking 500mg tablets, at first 2 a day for a week then 1 a day and now iím spacing it out to see what the optimal preventative dosage for me is. I think it really depends on your own individual brand of ulcer- as we know there is no common type or cause it seems...I would just pick a make of l-lysine and go with their recommendation and then tailor it from there.

Hi Cynthia, just stumbling accross this website, I stopped having mouth ulcers once I was diagnosed with lactose intolerance so I do not have milky products anymore. Occasionnaly my son still has them and I suspect that he is intolerant to sweets (he recently ate half a packet and got a massive ulcer few hours later). Our doctor prescribed Adcortyl ointment which is fantastic at healing the ulcer. I wish I knew about this years ago as well as about my lactose intolerance as I had more or less a mouth ulcer or two continuously for 25 years! Good luck.

Hi, you can try Danzen tablets. It is kind of Serratiopeptidase.
I bought it from a OTC pharmacy in my country (Singapore).
1st day used, not much results, BUT after 3 days, I can noticed some differences, and 4th day, the difference is even more noticeable. Within a week, I have no more ulcer in the top of my mouth!!

Both Lactose and Fructose malabsorbtion cause mouth ulcers for me, it only took 35 years to work it out, but am absolutely sure that they are responsible. I can tolerate small amounts of Lactose and Fructose its a matter of trial and error to see what you can tolerate.

I used to have mouth ulcers every month or so. Then I stopped eating raw tomatoes in January last year and since then (18 months now). I been pretty much ulcer free. Just had one or two since then when I bit my lip. I also found oranges and sour satsumas were to blame. Its such a relief to have found that such a simple act of not eating raw tomatoes could help so much. I think cooked tomatoes (e.g. in a lasagna) don't seem to be such a problem which is interesting but I guess they change a bit in cooking.

Please. Please . please listen. Go to your G. P. Ask him to do an indepth "Ferratin Level" blood test. Some people cannot store normal amounts of iron in their body. just as some people store too much resulting in Haemochromotosis. It is a Celtic thing. If your Ferratin level is low, every time you even touch the side of your mouth with toast, etc, you will damage the lining of the mouth and get an ulcer. Your G. P could say he has done your haemoglobin and it is fine. Insist on the "ferratin" level. It is totally different. It should be between 60 - 300 of a reading. 60 or less is very very low and requires 6 months of prescription iron tablets. I know this has woked a miracle for one of my family. We cannot believe how well it worked and want to shout it on Sky News. Our G. P. never heard of this as a cause, but a Professor in ear, nose and throat disgnosed it.

Good to see I'm not the only one!
I have had them since I was 12 (23 now) I remember having days off school as I couldn't eat which would make me tired, I was perscribed a great little paste which cleared them up and throughout the tube I was fine, however when I went to get my next batch it had been pulled of the shelf.
The Lady behind the till asked if I ate banana's "Yes" I replied, "One a day" - "That'll be it" she informed - I since stopped and what a great help that has been, I pesonally find its potassium - Bananas and Kiwis being particularly bad...not sure of the pottasium content of a Tomato but as I can't stand them they've never been a problem!

I have had ulcers for as long as I can remember. I am 33 years old now. I have seen more doctors than I have fingers and toes. I do not have herpes. I was told I have Bechets. But I don't. I have blisters, blood and fluid filled. Which I have been told is a different disease. I suffer everyday with ulcers, some as big as an eraser on a pencil and bigger if they combine. I eat what I want because everything hurts. I know that tomatoes and salad from Olive Garden make things worse. I prayed to be free of this pain, but I still hurt. I have the best husband ever who tries everything to make me hurt less. I love "Ulcer Ease" it WORKS!!! If some can help, please do. I really hope I am the only one who has this pain everyday. If not and you have a better way...please share.

Also if you are suffering: try Squigle brand toothpaste. It does not burn and leaves your mouth fresh.

I have also had ulcers since about 14 and like you, almost without a break. My eldest son was the same. Sometimes we'd both have 3 or 4 at the same time. After experimentation, I, too, found tomatoes to be the culprit. I cut them out for about a year and it was bliss. I recently went to Italy and was so taken with it that I went full Italian on my return home... and guess what else has returned with a vengeance? However, I've also found it's not JUST tomatoes that does it to me... peppermint or mint sweets do it too.

I have been getting mouth ulcers for years (I'm now 36) and I assumed I was just very susceptible to them. I have tried all sorts of things to ease the pain when I have them. However, it finally occured to me that the actual problem isn't likely to be in my mouth, but was more likely to be in my stomach/digestion system. I also had Tonsillitis for the first time about five years ago and have had Tonsillitis repeatedly since then (which coincides with a major outbreak of mouth ulcers each time). I went to see a nutritionist (because I was fed up of continual mouth ulcers) and one suggestion was to take a probiotic. I decided to go for Prebio7 (the reviews on Amazon were good), and have not had any mouth ulcers since taking them (4 months ago). It seems I just didn't have the guts, now I do.

The foaming agent in toothpaste is known to cause ulcers, is it LTT? I use kids toothpaste and hardly get an ulcer now - but interesting about the iron levels and lactose intorelance - I suspect both - must get tested!
GraceG 8 February 12
I've developed a system that works for me. I was previously getting 2 ulcers a month. Now I get maybe one a year.
(perhaps relevant to just me, perhaps not)
- Avoid gluten and lactose (I have dietary intolerances)
- Avoid lactose-free substitutes where they leave lactose in and just add lactase. If I have a large exposure to lactose I can be SURE that I will get an ulcer.
(relevant in general)
- Avoid all citrus/tomatoes/acidic things
- Chew sharp things (chips, toast etc. ) slowly
- Take 15 mg Zinc supplement everyday (helps with wound healing)
- Take calcium supplements (to compensate for avoiding dairy)
- Excessive alcohol consumption / lack of sleep doesn't help the immune system
Now, whenever I get the beginnings of an ulcer, it vanishes within a day or two - the healing function works! I also find that "Kennalog" (triamcinolone acetonide) can speed up the healing a lot too.

I've had mouth ulcers since as far back as i can remember. I have found one thing i cannot stop is any trauma to my mouth eg. I had a tooth removed and my entire mouth broke out in huge ulcers, very very painful. Any biting of cheek or tongue, also when i get my teeth cleaned i can guarantee they will pop back up the next day, and oh yeah watch out for toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate (sls) i use pronamel that does not contain that and it does help. I know when i eat any citrus or acidic foods i am doomed , tomatoes seem to be the worst for me. Last year i started taking probiotics and what a difference this makes. It is not a miracle cure by any means, i still get them here and there mainly because tomatoes are my favorite food and im weak but when i do there not as severe and they are gone alot faster. I seriously recommend trying a probiotic. It changed my life from miserable to almost like a normal person.
