Burning Mouth

To Swale and Louise I know what you are going through I have been putting up with these symptons on and off for many many years. There is a burning mouth diagnosis and there is a a couple of medicines that are available for it. Not many Doctors have heard about it but Dentists have a knowledge of it.It can last for up to a year or more but most of my attacks over the years only last for a month or so. It as driven me to the point of madness. If you put in your computer Burning Mouth Syndrome you will see what medicines to take and you will identify your symptons

oral allergy symdrome?? my tongue was swollen for six months, i had burning pallet for months, swollen gums, mucus lined gums, mouth ulcers...you name it - thought i was going nuts! Went to the allergy doctor - iím allergic to peanuts (ate peanut butter regularly), other nuts, many fresh fruit, many raw veggies. Iíve cut all that out, and sugar has been a nasty one - I suggest cut out as much white/brown sugar as possible (candies, cakes, etc.). Started using a toothpaste with no Sodium Laurel sulphate. Every time i eat sugar products the lining of my mouth becomes very sensitive and the burning starts. Itís a friggin lot of work to find out what is hurting you but you have to go through the work in order to help yourself. Wish you well guys.

Ok, I have a problem and could really use some help. Seems similar to some of you other poor sufferers. This is my second outbreak, the first one was 18 months ago. That started with one ulcer that overnight spread into clusters of small ulcers around the front of my tongue totalling more than 50! My tongue swelled up and my on-call GP was totally useless. That then led to a horrific throat infection which ended up with me in hospital then months and months of throat and chest infections. It only just cleared up a few months ago but on Friday night it started all over again with the ulcers. My tongue was lumpy, swollen and my whole mouth was burning. There were no on-call GPs available so I ended up in A&E 2 nights on the trot in absolute agony. I am now on a list of painkillers so long that I have to keep a chart of what Iím taking and when and my local pharmacist has been trying to diagnose me and is really worried !!! A&E also made me an appointment to see the ENT Consultant this coming Tuesday. What the hell is this thing? I am absolutely dying. I originally tried changing toothpastes and that worked but Iím still on the nice one and its not helping anymore. HEEEELLLLLLPPPPPP......!!!!!

Iíve had a similar problem to Louiseís but Iím sure its just ulcer-related. A big ulcer on the gum which was white, has gone down now but that got replaced by about 7 new smaller ulcers all the way around the edge of the tongue & theyíve been causing trouble for the past 12-14 days, resulting in tongue being v.sensitive, burning sensation, reddish patch on the top of the tongue. Iíve tried antibacterial mouthwashes (some doing more harm than good I think), started taking lysine tabs, B-complex tablets, tried warm water salt mouthwashes, getting more sleep, dietary changes and getting a kinder toothpaste off here. Since have now had enough of this latest outbreak, have contacted my doc for advice, sick of the burning sensation, things may be on the mend but Iím still in some pain and think 14 days has been long enough to be suffering, even though I may have hindered that progress by going too strong with Listerine and Corsodyl. Whisky was good but only offered temporary respite. Will let you know what the Doc says.

the only good news about these mouth complaints is that
they do go away.Bad news is that they are often replaced by
some other torture

About three weeks ago, I got possibly the worst canker of my life and Iíve had dozens of them over the years. It was almost on the tip of my tongue and the pain was unbearable. It was so bad that it seemed to trigger another problem in my mouth - a burning sensation in my tongue, roof of my mouth and the inside of my lips. It feels like these areas have been burned and thereís a constant sensation of a burning feeling. Now I not only have cankers and soreness on the roof of my mouth but this burning sensation has been added to the mix. My question is has anyone else had this and if so, what did you do about it and does it eventually go away?

Hi Dom thanks for the advice. The burning sensation in my mouth and post nasal drip as well. So I made an emergency apointment with the Dr. Seems that I am suffering from Hayfever. Would make sense the Pollen Count yesterday wasnít too bad and I didnít have the symptoms but today it is high so I have symptoms of hayfever once again. Dr checked my ears and throat which was fine. She checked my tongue and said it wasnít ulcerated but was coated which could be down to the mucas in my throat. I have been given a nasal spray to use so hopefully that will work. I was convinced it was mouth ulcers, just goes to show how wrong you can be! :o) I do have a scheduled appointment next Monday with my GP so hopefully Iíll know more then. Thanks again,

Louise

The big ulcer could have been started off by brushing too hard. There are many suggestions on this site, Iíd try the most popular ones and see what works for you. The anti-bacterial mouthwash is probably doing more harm than good. Good luck.

Hi Guys,

Just a wee question. For the past week I have been suffering from a terrible acid taste in my mouth which makes my mouth feel like it is on fire. My mother looked at my tongue and said there were tiny little red spots on my tongue. I have had a big ulcer at the side of my mouth I did originally think it was where I had brushed my teeth too hard but on closer inspection it was rounded it shape and was white but had the head of it missing so I am guessing that my toothbrush has knocked the head of the ulcer off resulting in snaller ulcers spreading on my tongue? The spots on my tongue are red and they are ever so tiny, I have been cleaning my mouth with antibactiral mouth wash I just wanted some advice really am I doing the right thing and do I have the signs of an ulcerated mouth? I have also had a sore throat and ear pain too.

Thanks, any advice would be appreicated,

Louise
