Yes, I used to use alum, when I was in India. How do you get it in the US? |

at the grocery store in the spice section. it is a pickling agent.
I just bought some to try- i have a sore on the underside of my tongue that keeps hitting my bottom teeth. OUCH. it hasn't worked yet, but hopefully it will feel better soon. |

I think alum (aluminum, or aluminium, sulfate) cauterizes tissue, destroys nerve endings and stops bleeding. As a dental site says in the case of mouth ulcers, cauterization replaces a sore that hurts with a sore that doesn't hurt. |

My grandfather was a pharmacist and I grew up knowing that this was the treatment for mouth ulcers. We had a little bottle of alum powder and would dip the end of a Q-tip in the powder and apply right to the ulcer. It would burn at first but then relieve the constant pain. I haven’t had one in many years so I was just looking back to see what I could find on the Internet. Sure enough, the treatment is still floating around! |
