Quitting Smoking Causes Mouth Ulcers

70 messages in this subject.

i had the same problem when i quit 10 years ago, mouth ulcers so painful, tongue, inside of cheeks/lips, throat, went to many doctors, had blood drawn, cultures of the ulcers, everything you could imagine. sometimes i had up to 40 of them as soon as they would get better, new ones were coming. i started smoking after 5 and 1/2 months of not smoking. now 10 years later i have decided to stop smoking again. i am gonna try weaning myself from cigs, i was a 2 pack a day smoker. for the last week i have smoked under a pack. i know this is the hardest way to quit, but hoping that gradual decrease of nicotine will make my chances of not getting ulcers better. will let everyone know if it works!

Glad to think that i'm not ALONE!! I got very paranoid about this problem and thought I was HIV positive until I get tested and it was negative, but still I got this mouth ulcer again and again!! Thankfully, I read an article saying that you likely to develop mouth ulcer when you quit smoking.. I always used "TAWAS" or "ALUM" it works effectively! But you must take the pain!

I quit smoking 5 days ago and have a huge sore under my tongue for about 3 days. But somebody on this message board put it beautifully "It's better to have a tongue full of ulcers than a tongue full of cancer" Im hoping some antiseptic mouthwash will get rid of it. Good luck people xoxo

I suppose the comforting thing is that this looks like a common occurrence! (Fat lot of good in resolution, though..).

I gave up smoking over 3 years ago and used nicotine replacement therapy for about 2 months before quitting nicotine altogether. I have no desire to go back to smoking, but have had this mouth ulcer issue creep up gradually. I don't think I had this problem initially, but its possible that it started soon after stopping nicotine and I didn't notice it until it was really obvious. I know its grown in severity over these 3 years and now is quite severe and always around the corner - clears for 2-3 weeks and then starts again, lasting a couple of weeks too. I'm trying my best to figure out what triggers it. I'm pretty sure nuts and dates (both my all-time favourites) seem to aggravate it.

Mouth washes, bonjela, lozenges and what-not help but not much. I can't wait to have the medical fraternity figure this one out. Its obviously an imbalance created by nicotine cessation. I don't like the idea of using nicotine again as that is the real habit-former and drug in tobacco.

Just be wary of gum disease. I've had one bout which required antibiotic treatment, but I ignored it initially thinking it was part of this mouth ulcer nonsense. So don't sit on this issue (ie bleeding gums).

I gave up smoking for 5 years but was plagued the whole time with mouth ulcers I tried everything to get rid of them but nothing worked so I started smoking again and for a year was pain free. I've now stopped again and within 2 weeks I have 5 ulcers and as soon as one goes they are replaced with another somewhere else in the mouth. After a lot of research I have decided to give Nicotine lozenges a try not that I need these to stop smoking but have heard they can work to put the ulcers at bay. I only have 1 or 2 tablets of the lowest strength nicotine and they do seem to work.

Zhizi - Watermelon Frost is a traditional Chinese treatment that people recommend. As for "western" treatment I'd suggest Oralmedic or Kenacort (Triamcinolone acetonide paste) to be the most potent. There are lots of other suggestions here on the board too. Good luck in your search, hope your dad stays off the smokes.
Dom Walton 24 October 13
I am a Chinese, I think the medical technology in China is not developed, so I want to look for help from your developed technology. Do you have some useful medicines? Could you please recommend some medicines to me?
Zhizi 24 October 13
my dad has the same problem for the last 8 months. He has tried many cures include traditional Chinese herbs, but nothing improved. Now he feels so painful and wants to smok again......so I search the internet...does any one have some effect ways?
Zhizi 24 October 13
I really feel that these ulcers are caused by the stress in our lives. Whenever I go on vacation or jump out of routine for a little while, they ALWAYS subside. But, whenever I jump back into routine - they come back. I do have a high demand job and it is very stressful. I have about 3 medium sized ulcers in my mouth right now and it hurts to talk and/or eat. I've tried L-lysine, mouthwashes (prescribed and OTC), saltwater, etc. Also, there is ONE medication that did help but it costed an arm and a leg (Valtrex). It's made for herpes and I believe that these ulcers are a viral infection that flares with stress. If you think about it, after smoking...you don't feel the effects of stress - many of them a day, and there you go - no effects of stress. So that's probably why we don't get ulcers when smoking.

Plzz Help me i dont want this ulsers ,they are much painfull when i am asleep, i quitted smoking 3 weeks ago. The ulcers are all over my mouth it seems that they gonna cover my lips also. The ulcers in tongue are the most painfull one

Further to my message earlier, I have got another doctor's appointment on 10 Oct and I'm going to ask for some possible antibiotics that might prevent these ulcers from coming - I won't leave the doctor's until I get something that hopefully will get rid of them for good.
Stella 21 September 13
I stopped smoking just over a year ago and since then I have had constant outbreaks of mouth ulcers, some of them quite large - they are always very very painful especially when eating and drinking or they just sting - it's like chewing hot razer blades!!! They even wake me up in the night because they are stinging!

I have stopped smoking before in the past but after a few weeks I started again because of the ulcers and as soon as I started smoking again the ulcers never came back! This time though I've gone over a year without smoking and I don't want to smoke again but these recurrent mouth ulcers are driving me mad! I went to my doctor a couple of months ago and she had never heard of this happening - she prescribed me with hydrocortisone tablets which she told me to take 4 times a day as soon as I feel a mouth ulcer coming. I still got the ulcers and the tablets stopped them getting worse but they don't prevent them! If I don't take the tablets in time then the ulcers will just get bigger and worse. I have trawled through the internet to look for a prevention of these horrible ulcers but I can't find anything. Even my doctor said I may always get them - annoying when I know I could start smoking again and they will go away!

I definitely don't want to start smoking again.

Does anyone have any advice? (I've tried all the painkilling mouth washes, mouth gels etc etc and nothing eases them - I've tried Bonjela, Anbesol and many others - even tried mouth wash and toothpaste from Holland & Barrett but nothing helps)

Thanks
Stella 21 September 13
Nearly eight months since I gave up smoking, and still getting mouth ulcers. Tried everything but antiseptic mouth wash is the only thing that helps. As time goes on they do do seem to be getting better. Good luck to you all

I quit smoking about 4 months ago and have recurring mouth ulcers ever since. I'm now taking Folice Acid Tabs and DS-24 Supplements - tried almost everyting on the market for ulcers in my mouth with no luck. Yesterday I found a new one called "Aloclair Gel" will see how it goes with this one, I see that you get it in a mouthwash and a spray as well - on the box it says No Stinging, Fast Acting, Long Lasting, Alcohol Free - With Aloe Vera Extract....well hope this will do the trick - Good luck to you guys

My husband smoked for 36 years and used Chantex to finally quit about 4 years ago. Am so proud of him. However the poor thing has been plagued by mouth ulcers ever since. He is constantly spraying his mouth with cloriseptic to numb the pain. He has always said that its because of quitting smoking and I don't want him to go back to the cancer sticks...I'm going to send him to our Dr. And see if he can help him.

Hay,
For this problem try applying coconut oil in the tongue two to three times a day . wash the mouth with salt water before apply oil.Don't allow the mind any excuse to start smoking again...........A MOUTH WITH ULCER IS FAR BETTER THAN A MOUTH WITH CANCER, : )

At @ 2 weeks without cigarettes, I suddenly had several, painful mouth ulcers under my tongue. Did online research and decided to try l-lysine (OTC amino-acid tablet). The next day, the little ones were gone and the big ones were smaller and less painful. By the second day, they were gone. I continued the l-lysine for a couple of days and have been mouth ulcer free for a week now!

I olso stop smoking now for five months, and since stop I got these ulcers in my mouth, under my tongue on the side and down the throat on the side of my tongue, can not see it but when I swallow water it hurts and it hurts very much. I ask the doctor for some medication and he prescripe Oracot but I can not use it because it is so far down my throat that I cannot reach there. I have a talk with my sister in South Africa and she ask her Pharmarcy what can she tel me what to use. They said I must get Andolex C or Orachlore an spray in in my mouth and throat. So I am going to get it today and wil let you now if it work or not. They olso said to get Frolic Acid and drink five every morning. I wil olso get that. What I cannot understand is that there is no doctor that can help us.
Wel if some of you want to try that I am going to. Good Luck.

I quit smoking 3 1/2 years ago and I have had mouth ulcers ever since. I am so tired of them. Yes, they hurt and hurt bad. I have tried mouth washes, changed tooth brushes, stop eating candy etc. but they come back! I have thought about starting back smoking but it was to hard to quit this time. I went to classes and took Chantix. I wonder if Chantix had anything to do with it???? But I will keep trying to do different things, something has to help!

I'm experiencing the same problem. Been a lil over 3 months and I haven't had one for 12 years I've been smoking but as soon as I quit a couple popped up. I don't have them as consistently and severe as some of you have described but I suppose that explains why I'm having bad quit zits along the jawline to make up for it.

I remember getting them when I was a kid and my mom used to give me this dark green powder that tastes a tad bitter but bearable. I'm usually dab onto the sores right before you I go to bed with a finger or buds right before I go to bed so it has more staying power and I don't lick it off by accident. When I wake up next morning, my sores don't hurt like a bitch as it does usually when u wake up in the morning than throughout the day and it actually feels like its healing. Do it again for the next 2 nights if required and it disappears. I had no idea what it actually is except that my mom buys it from a Chinese medicine store and calls it watermelon powder. Googled and found out that its call Xi Gua (Watermelon) Shuang (Frost). I found a couple of sites online that sells it but not in the traditional powder form but in a mouth spray form. Personally I'm not sure if the mouth sprays work as well but I would buy the powder that come in little plastic tubes/tiny vials. Perhaps they developed the mouth sprays for more convenience throughout the day. I recommend that you get both. This is afterall an aged old remedy. But please give it a go before you pick up another cancer stick guys!

hello to my fellow mouth ulcer pals i have been of work sick for 7 weeks with mouth ulcers and canker sores and i gave up smoking 3 months ago. When i first quit smoking i took extreme nausea, then a month later along came the mouth ulcers. My doctors told me it was herpes and so treated me with acciclovoir after 6 courses later which have lasted a total of 40 days they have now told me we dont know what it is and so have refferred me on to the rheumatologist my doctor took some bloods and my folic acid and iron in low and so they have commenced me on a course of folic acid and iron supplements and my ulcers have started to clear and feeling a lot better. Then i went to my dentist today and i was informed that when you smoke the lining of skin around your mouth and gums all thickens and toughens as an inflammatorry ressponse to the harmful chemicals in tobacco but when you quit this lining depletes and becomes very thin also when you are low in iron and your vitamin b's and folic acid this can all cause thinning of the linning on your gums mouth and tongue!!

so i hope and pray that by eating a very healthy diet and cutting out maybe on the sugar and crap i will start to feel a lot better and stop taking mouth ulcers i hope this helps someone else!!

The funny thing is that I was one of the unlucky people who was born with canker sores. I have had them my entire life. It totally sucks. When I started to smoke, they went away. Whenever I try to quit, they come back. It's so hard because I hate the way I feel when I smoke. But the relief from a life of pain in my mouth is just so amazing. I really wish that I could find a way to make these sores go away in a healthy way. I have tried so many things. Nothing has worked.

Hi guys, helpful to know this is related to quitting smoking and hopefully not something more serious. I didn't smoke cigarettes, smoked a lot of weed, just quit, and a week later, multiple, painful ulcers emerged on my tonsils and under my tongue. Causes a pretty bad sore throat and can even keep me up at night. Worst in the morning, probably after I've been snoring. The only thing I've found helpful is to drink lots of really cold water, that crunchy ice with small bits feels very relieving on the back of my throat. Ice cream and soda help, too, but I don't think consuming lots of sugar is helpful in the long run. I've heard that a lot of the ulcers are caused by yeast infections, which flourish when you eat a lot of sugar.

Hi guys,
Glad to know I'm not alone in this. I have quitted smoking near 4 months. Funnily, in the first 2 months, my ulcers were not that bad. But lately I began to get recurring ulcers. The ulcers on tongue hurt the most.
But most importantly, we shall NOT smoke again. We shall win this war.
Smoking sucks!

DRINK WATER!!!! this shit works, I forgot how I went on 'training' and never had a single cigarette, and never got sick for more than one day at a time. IT WAS ALL THE DAMN WATER I WAS DRINKING. drink like 8 20-ounce glasses before going to bed at night. youll wake up to piss a million times but it's a way better alternative to the hellish pain in your mouth.

Currently, I have more than 50 ulcers in my mouth, cheeks and tongue. The doctor said that it is normal due to the heat and hot weather. But now I understand why, like most of you guys, I just quit smoking!!!damn!!!I am so hungry and thirsty, and whenever i tried to spit it is like that my lips and tongue is being sliced and it burns...

Hey. I have just given up smoking 2 weeks ago and I feel terrible. My mouth has exploded with mouth ulcers, I have counted up to 8 now, plus 5 which have joined together!! The pain is so intense!!
I have been to the doctor who has given me a antibiotic mouth wash, which doesn't seem to be doing much. My mouth and lips are all dry and cracked and I never realised I would have this!! Really gutted as I have finnaly quit after 10 years and now I am faced with this pain everyday :(. Will it ever end...........???

I quit smoking three times and would always start again not because I wanted to smoke but because I knew the cigarretes would make my sores go away. I had up to ten sores at a time within a couple weeks of quitting lasting me up to to two months then I started smoking and they disappeared within a week. I have to let you know I have found what works for me right now. I joined a gym and they put me on a really healthy diet of protein light carbs and vegetables. I only drink water. It has been two months with no sores. Basically when I quit smoking change your diet too. No soft drinks, fast food, candy etc. but most of all no spicy foods!!! I would like too see what happens when others try this. Also it gets your body leaned down too so that's a plus. Good luck and trust me this is working for me big time.

I have been a mouth ulcer sufferer for all my life. Even when i was a child, have tryed all sorts to get rid of them but nothing has worked. I find a lot of things just mask the pain for a little while. Vit B, Vitamin supplements, Mouthwash, Diet change, Salt water washes, baking soda and more nothing seems to work. Have given up smoking for nearly six months and am at the end of the line cant handle the pain any longer and have decided i would rather be a stinky non healthy smoker than live in constant pain.

AFTER MANY (30 YEARS), I WAS FINALLY DIAGNOSED WITH NEURO-BEHCET'S DISEASE. CONSISERED A FATAL DISEASE. WHEN I QUIT SMOKING IN 2000 I HAD 3 OR MORE MOUTH ULCERS THE SIZE OF QUARTERS AT ALL TIMES.! MY MOUTH ULCERS WERE UNBEARABLE AND THE BEHCET'S HEADACHES GOT WORSE AND WERE PUSHING ME TO SUICIDE. I STARTED USING "CHEWING TOBACCO". IT IS CHEAPER AND BETTER THAN CIGARETTES WITH MY ASTHMA. THE INHALER MENTIONED (KNOWN AS "Q-VAR IN THE U.S.) ABOVE ALSO WORKS ON VAGINAL ULCERS AND TESTICULAR ULCERS IN MEN, AS WELL AS MOUTH ULCERS. MY FIRST VAGINAL ULCER WAS TREATED A SYPHLIS! EVEN THOIUGH I WAS NOT SEXUALLY ACTIVE. I CAN'T SUGGEST THESE REMEDIES FOR YOU. BUT THEY DO WORK FOR ME.

I gave up 20 years ago and started smoking again, using ulcers as an excuse, now £100,000 down the drain on cigs, gave up last week, few mouth ulcers but using red wine to numb the pain, the smoke from cigs kill off the bacteria in your mouth but your body will adjust without them.
Mark 29 May 11
Don't do it,don't go back on the ciggs, have you tried takeing vitamin c,the last time I quit my mouth was so bad with ulcers this time I've been takeing vitamin c,I'm still getting mouth ulcers but its not so bad

I quit smoking 5 months ago- I have been the sickest i've ever been in my life since! Within 2 weeks of quitting I had a 'bacteria infection' called Acute Viral Pharangetis- effects the throat, no medication for it-my throat felt like chunks of choppped wood in it- that lasted TWO months, lost a $500 week job, i couldnt talk,- I have had ulcers ever since NOT ONE DAY free, have quit 2 jobs since,it makes you SO frustrated feeling bad so long-to eat, talk, the pain keeps you awake. Been to the E.R. twice, got percaits for pain-took a job moping floors, housekeeeping thinking it would be easier job since i woulndt have to talk as much- done the yougurt,lysine-listerine-etc I'm going back to smoking! this is NOT a life- i quit to be healthier, to feel better! i'll take the earllier death than this constant pain-i have been able to taste/enjoy ONE meal in 4 months- i'm going back to smoking- if that is the only way to STOP this for me!
pat king 13 May 11
@Keith thanks for the tip! After several doctor visits with xrays and blood tests, I was diagnosed with GERD
(Gastroesophegal reflux disease) and was told to change my diet and lifestyle completely! The disease was mainly caused by years of smoking but also stress and certain foods play a key role in developing the condition.
It's been a couple of weeks since the diagnosis and all my ulcers have disappeared. I am fighting the disease still and trying to adapt to these new conditions. With no coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, alcohol, tomatoes, oranges, lemons, sugar, processed meat and dairy products, life can seem empty and lonely. But I have had to accept and acknowledge my conditions and at the end of the day I choose to stay ulcer-free and healthy!
Smoking cessation had probably caused a number of blisters in my mouth but it was the acidic food that made them grow back in numbers and cause all the pain!
It isn't just one thing causing the ulcers. Often two or three causes make these conditions almost impossible to control and diagnose. Smoking can mask a problem for a long time and once you quit, they reveal themselves in multitudes.
Eugene 19 April 11
Rachel,
Thank you for your reply. I have been to serveral doctors and not one of them can agree on a diagnosis. Too bad there isn't a test for Bechets. I personally believe i don't have it even though I do occassionally have genital sores. Who knows what is causing them. I only had them maybe a couple times whereas I have the oral ulcers continuously everyday nonstop for the last 2 yrs. I thought I was doing something good by quiting smoking, I didn't realize the pain it would cause. I just want my life back!!
Tammy 14 April 11
Tammy, given you have both oral and genital ulcers, it definitely indicates Bechets and you need to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
Rachel 14 April 11
I quit smoking almost 2 yrs ago. Like many of you I had mouth sores ocassionallly but 2 weeks after I quit smoking I developed severe mouth sores/ulcers. One will heal 2 will replace it. I currently have 10 sores in my mouth. I can barley eat, drink, or swallow. My doctor says it has nothing to do with quiting smoking which I don't believe. He sent me to a dentist who burned the sores with some knd of acid to try to kill the nerves (which did not work) he then sent me to a dermatalogist who decided I have something called Bechet's Disease he prescribed antibiotics and liquid steroids which didn't work he also sent me to an eye doctor because Bechet's causes blindness... the eye doctor acted as though my dermatalogist was crazy. I have also been to my female doctor because believe it or not having all these sores in my mouth and swallowing excessive amounts of yucky saliva I occasionally develope the same ulcers down below.... that doctor said it was an std...which I know is not possible. But out of all these doctors not one will prescribe a pain killer. I am in sooooo much pain I can barely function to care for my children...
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

I've always suffered cankers/mouth ulcers but since quitting smoking i.ve had some of the worst including cold symptoms. my GP gave me a prescription called Oracort. It is pretty amazing stuff! it goes on the ulcer like a paste that sticks to the gum. the pain is immediately subdued and overnight the inflamation reduced by 50%. 2 days and its gone.Listerine is also a great way to kill the bacteria in the mouth and reduce the pain of canker, ulcer sores.smoking acts as antibacterial so listerine or alcohol based rinses can help in replacment. hope this helps.
Laura 2 April 11
@Eugene..........I found a cure that has helped me, i have suffered for 5yrs with ulcers and now there all gone, i got a inhaler from my gp. Its to be held in ure mouth and not inhaled, it has a strong steroid in it and kills the ulcers, its called Clenil Modulite 100 (Beclometasone dipropionate). Its working for me, have had no ulcers this 2 mths now and its great. The inhaler is used for asthma but the steroid in it kills the ulcers, try it out

I quit smoking a month ago and 10 days after I got two huge sores on my throat. It took about 10 days for them to disappear. The pain was indescribable. I couldn't eat, drink, sleep or breath. After that I got multiple sores on my tongue and inside the lips. Not only do they hurt, they are frequently going away and re-appearing on other places on the tongue. I have changed my diet completely avoiding spicy and hot food. I was prescribed antifungal medicine and wash and rinse my mouth with water more than ever with no effects whatsoever. The pain is the worst, and it feels like I have the tonsils of a fire dragon. It burns when I inhale through my mouth and as food passes my tongue. I can't really talk and eating and swallowing is a challenge. During the last couple of days I also experience an excessive amount of saliva in my mouth as if I was having reflux, but I have no heartburns. I was scared it was oral cancer cause my symptoms are very similar but there are no lumps or bleeding from the sores and they last only some days before new ones emerge. I am not sure if anyone can help me reading everybody else's comments here but if any smokers who have experienced the same symptoms and know of a remedy please share them here, it would mean a lot.

I just posted a new thread about L-Glutamine powder curing my ulcers. Mine started when I gave up smoking two years ago, and they were HUGE and each one lasted for two or three months. Taking L-Glutamine has completely cured them. I am sooooo happy about it!

I have suffered from recurring mouth ulcers since I was a kid, but they were nowhere near as severe (5mm), and nowhere near as frequent (every week) and nowhere near as numerous (4 at a time) as they have been since I quit smoking 18 months ago. It's doing my head in. The only thing that makes me feel any better about the condition is that many folks on this board are doing it way harder than I am, and I should consider myself lucky.

This is so weird!! I quit smoking 3 months ago and have had recurring canker sores and cold sores. I have also had shingles!! Is this really related to quitting smoking and if so when does it stop! I have been sick ever since I quit smoking! I do not want to start again for sure but these canker sores in the bottom of my mouth are killing me and make it very difficult to eat! Help!

I too have the re-ocurring mouth sores, I quit about 5 mouths ago, and yes they hurt a lot. But I wouldn't go back to smoking for a cure.

Hey guys, I come from Hong Kong. I have suffered the same cases as yours. I quit smoking almost 2 months, the ulcers have had recurring on my tongue ever since, I did go to clinic almost once a week. Unfortunately nothing has been improved. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

I quit smoking about 8 months ago and has been having recurring mouth ulcers ever since. I have tried several cures but they don't seem to help. Now I am thinking of using Nicotine Substitutes like Nicotine gum. Any comments from ex-smokers?

GPs have been advised to inform smokers trying to quit that they could develop a cold or mouth ulcers.

The recommendation was made by UK researchers, who provided for the first time clear evidence of a significant increase in cold symptoms and mouth ulcers following smoking cessation (Tobacco Control 2003; 12: 86-88).

‘Being psychologically prepared for these effects is likely to mitigate their impact on the cessation attempt,’ the researchers suggested.

The study involved 174 people who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day for 3 or more years.

Of those who stopped smoking for at least 6 weeks, increases in reports of mouth ulcers and cold symptoms occurred during the first 2 weeks of quitting.

The development of mouth ulcers could be related to the absence of the antibacterial effect of smoking, whereas cold symptoms could be explained by a reduction in salivary immunoglobulin A after quitting, the researchers said.

University of NSW Professor Nicolas Zwar, who has researched smoking cessation in general practice, said mouth ulcers and cold symptoms following smoking cessation were rare, but patients often complained of ‘coughing up mucus’.

And trust me it hurts
