As far as I can remember I’ve had mouth ulcers - why I don’t know ( does anyone ? ). And over the years I’ve tried every lotion and potion, mostly pharmacy off the shelf stuff. The best of those being TCP not entirely effective, but eases the pain the best. salt is good, but works as good as TCP, but with more pain ! However, it was a visit to an alternative remedy shop that changed my life. He asked if I’d tried tincture of myrrh. Used for hundreds of years for tooth and gum ache apparently. So, in for a penny and all that I got some. I tell you it is flippin excellent; tastes foul ( bitter ) so have some chocolate standing by but just twice a day in the initial stages of ulcer growth and I swear the things dont take hold and just disappear in a day or two without any pain at all. Please, please can someone else try it so they can confirm I aint dreaming ? Just google the name in to find a supplier - there are quite a few.... Good luck ! |

I’m going to try it tomorrow! Can I post a picture of mine on here for everyone to see? Maybe we could have an ulcer competition. It would make me feel better...Merry ulcer Christmas. |

Tincure of Myrhh - I forgot al about out - just stumbled on this site cuz I'm trying to learn to pay the trumpet & I can't practice with a bloody mouth ulcer the size of Wales on the back of my lip.
I've always suffered from them & I reckon they're bought on by tiredness, stress & depression (or all 3 combined).
Some mouthwashes help but that's trial and error as to which ones.
Whisky helps sometime (with all of the above - But I'd forgotten about Tincture of Myrhh which I used to use when I was younger (I'm 33 now).
Sooo i'm gonna get some tomorrow
TINCTURE OF MYRRH - IF IT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE BABY JESUS IT'S GOOD ENOUGHT FOR ME !!!!

Hi to all
At last some people who seem to understand the hell of this affliction. I've suffered all my life, I'm now 53, and the latest on slaught was just in time for xmas and new year. I was in Atlanta for new year at my brothers and he was shocked that I still suffered. They were so bad that on the way to the airport for my return home we had to stop at a garage for water as I was spitting out mouthfulls of blood, great way to end a trip. Any help would be great as my daughter gets them as well. I'm gonna rush out and buy the Myrhh and give it a go.
Thanks to whoever set up this site.

| Ive been suffering in silence for years. Ive been using bongela with only gives a few moments relief. My last bout of mouth ulcers have been the worst Ive ever had. Ive had to take pain killers every 4hrs. Normally they go after a couple of days but Ive had these over a week. I feel really tired and fedup. I havnt been run down so I cant understand why Ive got them. The only thing I can think of is that Ive been eating loads of gourmet jelly beans. Do you think that these may have caused them? Im close to tears discussing this. |
| Michelle 24 January 08 |

|
Hi Michelle
You mentioned eating loads of jelly beans. I know that if I eats loads of sugary stuff (esp chocolate) then it seems to bring on the ulcers. But I tend to eat that kind of stuff when I'm tired and fedup. So not sure what comes first. |

I am amazed that so many other people are suffering from the huge ulcers that i am doomed with!! Just for your information, i started getting them around the age of 12 when i started to wear a brace. After many painful bouts.. the doctor concluded that i suffered from Bechett's syndrome (not sure if that is spelled correctly) and it is quite rare and up to now incurable. It basically is the difference between people who get 'little ulcers' that go after a couple of days, and the big painful craters that are red around the edges and can take weeks to heal. They can even wake me up in the night with the pain! Anyway, i've found that Bonjela is ok for immediate but short relief, salt water good for cleaning your mouth and the infected areas but not really for pain relief, Tooth ache ointment (the red liquid in a tiny bottle) hurts like mad when applying but really kills the pain for a while.... and ice cream! Not only because it numbs the sore area but because im usually feeling sorry for myself at that point too!
Good luck everyone,.. and i look forward to trying the Myrrh ointment too xx |

| My daughter had these for years as a child. The doctor gave her a series of small pox vacinations and they disappeared until this year (30 years later) She was told they do not have small pox vacine around any longer oh well |

| What is tincture of myrhh? do they sell it at the local drug store? I have tried everything, only prednisone works but it is not good for you b\c it is a steroid. Have anyone tried thalidomide? a doctor recommended it but I said no due to the side effects. |

To Claire. 1 Feb 08
Behcets Syndrome is a whole different ball game and is quite rare. It is an incurable Auto Immune Disease.
I too have the awful Apthous ulcers in my mouth but with Behcets these can be on most areas of the body. The UK/USA have dedicated web sites for people with Behcets. These outline the various other symptons which you may have and form the basis of a medical opinion.

| I have been told about a product called Sea Buckthorn oil which helps the immune system, you can buy it in tablet form to build up your immune system or dab on the oil directly. Its about £10.00 for a 30ml bottle but they reckon it should last you a month. Hopefully your immune system will be able to fight off other ulcers by then and therfore you don't get as many or not as severe. |

Myrhh? Jellybeans? hehe. Clutching at straws guys. Nothing will stop you getting them. All you can do is deal with each attack. Anbesol adult gel is the undisputed only product on the market that gives any real relief at all. It will allow you to talk on the phone for a while and eat dinner without total agony. Use that in association with Betnesol (available on prescription) tablets dissolved in water and swallowed. They are steroids that are just anti inflammatories. They help. Everything else on the market is rubbish and every cure you hear is an old wives tale.
Take it from me, a long long long sufferer.
I actually went to the dentist a couple of months ago and i had two ulcers (nothing unusual). She asked if i get them often. "All my life" i said.
I could not belive what she said to me: "Did you know that you can get this stuff that you put on the ulcer called Bonjela".
Jesus! Is that the best she can do is it! That must be the orignal and most utterly useless thing there is for mouth ulcers. Bonjela is for people that do not get or know mouth ulcers. They have an odd occurrance, see the ad on tv and think that is what they have to buy. Surely she learnt more than that at dentistry school! Oh well never mind. Dear of her.

I wonder if everyone who suffers kept a diary of food, stress/tiredness levels, illness etc, whether we would see a pattern emerging? That isn't a cure, but it may be a way of avoidance. Something I would so welcome.
Mine started about 18 years ago and in my diary at the time I mention being totally run down and having (unusually at the time) a mouth full of ulcers. I do wonder if the ulcers are a symptom of a rogue bug that has got into the system and pops up when your body is under stress.
When I get them particularly those on my tongue I also feel slightly unwell, and tired. The best way of getting rid of them or at least preventing them developing into something 'orrible is to rest as much as possible - something I can do as I don't work now - retired. |

| See, I've had ulcers since I was a baby. My parents had to take me off the bottle and feed me through an eye-dropper. So I doubt it's anythign to do with diet or stress in my case. |

| In response to Mark, 3 Feb - My mum who suffers with crater-like mouth ulcers constantly was put on a Thalidomide trial some years ago, when Drs originally thought it might work. She had had all her children by then, so wasn't worried about those sort of side effects we all associate with that drug, but anyway, didn't work at all for her. Nothing has worked for her, she's now 60 & had them all her life. Me & my sister also suffer, but nothing like her, none of us have found anything that really prevents these outbursts, only typical remedies for helping the pain once the ulcers appear. Sorry. |

| I posted something elsewhere on this message board about Weleda Salt toothpaste (excellent for preventing and treating mouth ulcers). Just thought I should add here that it does actully contain Myrhh too! |

I've currently got a massive ulcer cluster just inside my lip. It started as 4 seperate small ones which have now merged. absolute agony and Anbesol eases it for about three minutes if I can get the stuff off my finger first! Does anyone else get an ulcer everytime they bite their lip/cheek/tongue?
I was once told by a Doctor that ulcers were due to a lack of vitamin B. I took supplements but noticed no change.
I have suffered for as long as I remember and seem to get a lot more at the back of my throat now. I'm 35 and believe me when I say there is nothing you can do to stop them. |
| Dan Ulcerking 10 March 08 |

| I have been to doctor's over these things and always get the same response : "Nothing you can do about them". When they are severe my entire body feels run-down and I get into a real "funk", as though I was depressed or "ticked-off". Does anyone else experience this as well? I was given Polio vaccine (orally - 1 teaspoon on 3 occasions) but didn't help. I was told that my asthma inhaler may be a cause, Ventolin, but these things don't seem to have any rhyme or reasons for coming on. Am willing to try the Tincture of myrrh. |

| I have suffered from mouth ulcers all my life and when I was a kid my Mum said it was because I sucked my thumb. Well, I stopped sucking my thumb a long time ago and I still get them, so no logic there! My doctor used to prescribe me something called Adcortyl in Orabase, which back then was only available on prescription. Now you can get it over the counter. It's a thick paste and you put it on the ulcer and then it dries it up. It takes a couple of days but is quite effective. The only place it doesnt work is if the ulcer is on the roof of your mouth. The tongue has a habit of scraping it off quite quickly. For those all I use is TCP. |

| I have had ulcers since young, and an apparent way to prevent ulcers from the TCM (traditional chinese medicine) perspective is to avoid eating heaty foodstuff. i.e. foods or food preparation methods that are believed to make the body hot and affect conditions such as fatigue or blood circulation (affecting yin and yang). Examples of these food items are mutton, ginger, chocolate and fried food. One should avoid eating these too frequently to prevent the growth of mouth ulcers. |

| Hello, I have suffered with mouth ulcers all my life I am now (45). About 8 to 10 years ago my doctor gave me Valtrex. Yes it is for herpes (that I don't have), but it worked after taking it the first time. So please try it , I found that there are lots of people that take it for mouth ulcers. |

| Myrrh works. It really does. It has a very stron history of use as an anti-microbial and anti-fungal. Sunspirit in Australia does a great tincture. |

| i am so stunned that there are other sufferers out there - the pain is immense and i always thought i was the only person in the world who got them so bad as my family have no idea. salt water, anbesol, rinstead and bonjela is terrible and nothing works and they are so painful. i have a terrible diet and go for days without drinking or eating a proper meal without realising. this may be a cause to them. i am also in love with pineapple and every other fruit going which contributes to the pain. why do we have to suffer! my worst case was 9 at a time. the pain was unbelievable i had to bonjela every single one. my boyfriend held my head to the pillow to muffle the screams. after reading your advice i will definately try the tincture of myrrh tomorrow thanks guys |

| I too get ulcers whenever I bite my cheek of inside my lip, I haven't pinned it down to anything yet but have a feeling about eggs and/or bananas. Anyway I find if I put bonjela onto the area I have bitten straight away it seems to stop the ulcer coming on altogether. Like everyone else if the ulcer is full blown I don't find it much good, just a few minutes relief. Will try the Myrrh if I cant get bonjela onto the bitten area on time and end up with a full blown ulcer |

Hi there,
I've had ulcers in the past but never really sufferred until now. I have had a couple of "holes" appear in my mouth last week and one on my tongue - God it hurts. I keep experimenting salt, mouth wash, icecream (anything cold!), bonjela just slides off the tongue and now the hole on my tongue appears to get bigger! Well I'll try a few things and feel for you guys. Hope mine is a one off occurrence as I am tired, stressed etc but who isn't these days - hope you all find your wholly grail soon. |

| This is the first time I've looked at your website and I thought I would find garlic listed as a cure, but I can't see it. Always works for me. Get a fresh garlic clove, slice in half and hold the cut side on the ulcer for about 2-3 mins. If ulcer especially bad then hold the other half on for another 2-3 mins. Hurts loads but (I do this at just before I go to bed) in the morning the ulcer has died! Just make sure you have a supply of mints in the next day! |

| I found something that WORKS!!! I tried everything and nothing was working. After many visits to different Doctor's and years of pain, I finally found a Dermatologist who knew of a cure. It is called Tetracycline Suspension. I have to get a prescription and then have it filled at a special pharmacy (the old type that actually makes liquid prescriptions). It only works if it is made as a liquid suspension and I use it as a mouthwash. With my insurance it is $25.00 and it expires every two weeks but I push it out to 3 or 4 weeks. I am in the Dallas, Texas area and if anyone has more ?'s about the Tetracycline Suspension, feel free to contact me directly marciakjf2007@aol.com |

| Ciara - that is an interesting thought about eggs/bananas causing the ulcers. I've only recently started eating both of these products on a daily / semi-daily basis, and low and behold, I get my first mouth ulcer! Having said that, it may also be stress and/or tiredness that caused it to appear as I was stressed and tired a lot of the time in the weeks leading up to it appearing. Really sucks because my job requires me to talk for 70-80% of the day. I'm hoping this is a one off otherwise it could really cause some problems in the long term :( |

| Hi, I have had mouth ulcers for years, a new one every week ! When I mentioned it to the doctor she said it was due to a zinc deficiency, started taking zinc supplements and I've never looked back. Decided to come off the zinc in the New Year just to see what would happen and one or two started to come again, but treated them with tincture of myrrh which I have always used to get some relief. Now back on the zinc and everything has cleared up, would definitely recommemnd it ! |
| Anne 12 April 08 |

|
| Hi i've been told i've got zinc deficiency took 15mg every day after 3 months had a test and i was still low doctor told me to take up to 135 mg a day i thought this was too much? thought it could cause iron deficiency. How much do you take Anne? |
| KIRSTY 13 April 08 |

|
| Hi Kirsty, I take 25mg and it seems to have worked ! The doctor didn't say what amount, I just took the zinc tablets from Holland and Barrett or ones from the supermarket. |

Great info,i also suffer scince i can remember and tryied all i could,i will go for myrr, zinc even gluten free diet!!!i didn't knew about all that!!!
i am 42 now an the only real cure i found are cold water enemas,it pumps your innmune sistem and cleans your whole sistem. They normally dissapear in 24 to 36 hours.
The problem is that you can't abuse enemas because they dehidrate your body too and make you loose weight and mental concentration. So no good when you have much work to do.i hope my experience is usefull...thanks

Hi everyone,
I have Coeliac Disease (an allergy to gluten) and have been on a gluten free diet for 6 years now, but my mouth ulcers have not stopped coming. I have had them all my life as well. I know that the doctors officially say 'no' to food intolerences, but I strongly suggest to everyone that they give it a go at the naturapath or homeopath. Its likely that one intolerance is causing it and if you go off it for a while, you can ease yourself back onto it and it may get rid of the ulcers. This is what I will be trying.
Ulcers have been said to be a symptom of Coeliac disease so perhaps a gluten free diet could help some. My ulcers seem to get worse when I accidentaly consume gluten. However, I have them all the time anyway. The myrr sounds great and I will give that a go. I am a true believer that doctors can be extremely naieve when it comes to alternative medicines, even though its how our ancestors lived for years!
Good luck to everyone |

I suffer from them all the time and usually use bonjella to sooth them but this time i am in agony. TCP seems to be the best releif so far but only for a short time. Ive heard garlic is to be a fast and effective cure so ive sent my boyfriend out to get me a few cloves......so i a shall let ye know |

| I've already recommended taking zinc and using Tincture of Myrrh if you can get hold of it, but another pain reliever is Eludril mouthwash - about £4.50 from Boots. If you wash your mouth out and hold the liquid in your mouth where the ulcers are, for as long as you can do it, then it does give some pain relief for a while. Fresh minty breath too !! |

I've had ulcers since I can remember. I can remember struggling to talk and eat since I was young. I feel like there was a month or two where I was ulcer free. I wished I new what I did different or what was different about me that I was ulcer free. The last couple years it seems like it is rare if I get a ulcer free day. One thing that is frustratring is that doctors dont seem to know much more about them than we do. I am married to a doctor and these little uclers seem to be stumping the profession. THanks for posting your comments. If I ever come across anything that works I will be sure to let you know

| I know that in certain parts of London, UK, the NHS allow you to go to just walk up to the surgery reception and get prescriptions for "non-urgent" maladies, ulcers being on that list. They always prescribe adcortyl in orobase, the first thing that worked for me, if only in a limited way. But it beats Bonjela, which I am convinced was invented to humour people who thought they had ulcers, or to treat patients that their GPs wanted to see suffer! It's interesting reading peoples early experiences of their ulcers. I used to have them as a child and for from four to six years old was treated with the likes of Bonjela and the 'purple stuff' and then on referral to the hospital the doctor spoke to my mother about injecting my tongue with something should the need arise if my ulcers continued. She was asked to monitor me for a while and then come back to see him in three weeks. I never got an ulcer again. I can only assume the fear of have a whacking great needle placed in my tongue scared me out of my ulcers and now 30 odd years later, here I am going through it all again: 5 years of recurrent ulcers over various parts of my mouth and tongue (the worst being a 2cm canker in the crease of my mouth down by the lower molars on my right side that didn't go for, what felt like, ever!) But somehow there is nothing that can scare me out of the condition. I have idle daydreams of doctors telling me they will throw me off the top of the Natwest Tower, or that I will dropped in a vat a boiling oil to cure them and al I can think is... oh, the comfort of a vat of boiling oil, what a relief! |

| In absolute desperation I googled mouth ulcers and found this amazing site... I didn't realise just how many people suffer like I do! It is some consolation for the immense pain I am currently experiencing... ulcers in just about every part of my mouth.. roof, gums and lips.. I have been using SM33 and a Betadine mouthwash which I normally use when I get a sore throat. This seems to help, it kills the bacteria and cleans any "bits" away from those places you can't brush! Brushing teeth is a nightmare as we all know.. Reading your comments has given me hope, I'm certainly going to try the Myrrh, as I'm now up to day 5 with only a slight difference. I also have been to numerous doctors over the years and no one really has any help. I find I get them when I am stressed or run down, as soon as you get that tingle, you know they are on the way! I have starting take Zinc when I feel them coming on and that seems to reduce their size and longevity! I thank you all for your cures, it nice to know you aren't alone when you can't sleep or eat with the immense pain! |

| Tincture of Myrrh is good, or Myrrh essential oil mixed with a drop of an edible oil. It can usually be found (or ordered online) at health food stores and places that sell essential oils. Try to get Myrrh that's fair trade or of good repute. (Lot of bad essential oils out there.) Another thing that's worked for me is Lavender essential oil. You can use lavender neat (one drop) on any open wound, but for a delicate place like your mouth, I'd suggest mixing it with oil. Using any essential oil, mix a drop with a drop oil and try it on the skin of your inner elbow first, to make sure you're not allergic. |
| KB 13 May 08 |

|
| P.S. The reason why sometimes these remedies work and sometimes they don't is usually because there are different things that cause the ulcers. A nerve condition, herpes (yes, cold sores are herpes, just a different kind from the STD), an injury to the tissue that got infected, etc. The myrrh and lavender will help in a lot of cases because they are powerful disinfectants and promote healing of tissues. If you have a medical condition that causes the ulcers, all the oils may do is give some relief of pain and help heal the tissue. |

| I have Crohns Disease and suffer from chronic mouth ulcers. I definitely notice they get worse if I'm under P although the crohns doesn't like stress either. I can have anything from a dozen up to forty in a bad week. It really is debilitating and can make me very tetchy. My sons know when mummys mouth is bad!! I saw an ad for the bery oil tonight and I'm going to try that-I've tried loads of other things over the years. Fingers crossed. |

| Boots sell a product called, simply, 'Mouth Ulcer Treatment' £5.99 for 3 'treatments' which are basically 6 cotton buds - 3 plain and 3 with some reddish liquid in. Anyway, tied it for the first time yesterday, and experienced almost instantaneous pain relief from a large ulcer on the side of my tongue which was also giving me a sore throat and ear ache. Makes the ulcer look really angry, but almost painless. Just waiting to see how long it takes the ulcer to clear up now, but will definitely be using this product again. Chocolate seems to be the cause of my life-long ulcer attacks. |

ive had ulcers for as long as i can remember tryed most things but nothing helps... bonjela is a load of **** and does nothing. im in New Zealand and cant seem to find anywhere to get myrrh... going to doctor for the millionth time tommorrow to see if it could possibly be an allergy to something as thats all theyre managed to come up with. its nice to know im not the only one but stories of 40+ years of this hell isnt appealing....
hope its nothing to do with chocolate...i dont have it too often but i love it...ill deal with the pain and eat it regardless >.< |

| Hi - I hope I haven't crashed in on your message board, but I didn't know where to write about this. I have suffered from mouth ulcers for the past few years which have got REALLY bad in the last 6 months. Somebody at work mentioned an old wives tale to me, that got me thinking. Apparently if you have mouth ulcers it can be an indication that you've got an upset stomach. I've been taking Voltarol for the last few years for a knee problem. I have stopped taking these (it has been shown that they can cause stomach ulcers), and I can't believe the difference. I still get ulcers, but no-where near as often and only one at a time (rather than 10!). Just thought some other people might like to try this to see if it helps them. |

| Hi guys, Thanks for all the info. Never been here before. Suffer on and off for years with ulcers. The last two i have had for a week now, two together under my tongue. I will try to get some tincture of myrrh. Had some french fires from Maccas which had way too much salt on and I nearly went through the roof with pain AAAAGH!!! |

I have had mouth ulcers on and off for about 20 years, I'm now 42. When I get an attack of them I get around 5 or 6 med size ones and the odd BIG! one. They hurt like hell and make me feel very run down. Luckly I have tracked down the cause to MSG in foods. If I eat something with MSG in it within 2 days it's hello ulcers, and they last for 10 days. I have managed a year free of ulcers when I would of normally had 8 attacks a year. The big problem for me nowing for sure that the food I eat is MSG free because a lot of food companies hide it. Does anyone else have the same problem?

| Google Behcet's Syndrome. I struggled with the ulcers for years and finally went to the Cleveland Clinic where I was diagnosed with Behcet's Syndrome. I was given colchicine to take, a medication commonly used for gout. It's like a miracle! I now get an ulcer once or twice a year, that are very small, and last only a short time compared to the "monsters" I used to get, that were weekly, and lasted 3-4 weeks. Talk to your doctor about this. Many don't know about Behcet's Syndrome, but insist. I have my life again; I can talk, smile, kiss, eat! |

| Dear All, thank you for the useful information. I am now 28 and have had ulcers since my late teens (as with many people on this forum, I'm not sure what triggered it and why it continues). I do no exercise, spend far too much time at the office and have a poor diet. I do not think my job (trainee lawyer) is stressful - although it does have its moments. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the advice on zinc supplements and tincture of myrrh - which I will try tomorrow. Tonight I am going to try an Indian "remedey" which my girl friend has suggested: Turmeric and milk... I will let you know if it has any effect. |

| I can't believe so many people are suffering with these blasted things just like me! I went through the whole of school (Im now 31) thinking I was the only one in the world to get them. I have tried everything, been to the hospital and dental hospital for tests on allergies and deficiencies and nothing came up! I never feel particularly run down (although I do get them then as well). When I get them, I have 5 or 6 at a time and can be off work for 2 days as I can't eat or talk. I get a horrible flu-like feeling that goes along with them. I think people who don't get them think I am exaggerating sometimes. I am definately going to try some of the cures everyone else has mentioned. Thanks heaps for all the info. In a sick way, it's good to know there are other sufferers out there!!! |

having had mouth ulcers for as long as i can remember its great to know im not alone! im 35 now and still not sure what causes mine! i think the old "stress" chestnut is a load of cobblers as there have been many stressfull times in my life and havent had a single ulcer..then when im relaxed and stressfree....HELLO MOUTH ULCERS!
Anyway having visited my dentist a few days ago, displaying 2 rather angry lip ulcers he suggested a spray called "Corsodyl" which he assures me a lot of his patients swear by..as im ulcer free at the moment (thank god) i will try this spray out when a little beastie next appears..
As a final thought..it may just be coincidence but ive noticed when my toothbrush is getting to the stage where it needs replacing(ie the bristles are soft and non uniform) thats when i seem to get the little buggers..could it be the soft bristles sometimes lightly pierce or graze the lip surface allowing the ulcer to form? |

THIS IS THE CURE.....
When my sisters & brothers were little, we used to have mouth ulcers all the time. My Nanna from overseas came to stay with us for a while. She treated our mouth ulcer with a pinch of ALLUM POWDER to the sore area. Get ready for major stinging...#*@%+#! BUT after an hour it's healed and you are free from the curse! You can find ALLUM POWDER from any Asian Grocery shops. By the way, salt doesn't work! |

| i just found out two days ago that i suffer from mouth ulcers. I was told five years ago that i had herpes but the valtrex did nothing. Now they have me on antibiotics, valtrex and prednisone. Still nothing. I cant believe how many people are going through this. Im so glad to stumble upon this site, it gives me some comfort to know Im not alone. I have been suffering from depression for many years and maybe this is a big part of these painful sores. I have gotten a lot of ideas to try tonight and will be trying them tomorrow. I have 12 sore right now, I havent eaten in 3 days, Ive missed work for a week and may be fired and I have four amazing boys that I havent been able to do anything with. If anyone has any more ideas for me this would be so wonderful. Thank You!! |

| Hi - my daughter's just been diagnosed with Coeliac disease. For the last couple of years she's experienced mouth ulcers on and off as well as oral thrush attach. We've been reading up on the symptoms of Coeliac and it does mention mouth ulcers. They can do a specific blood test now to check for certain antibodies. If these are found then they like to carry out an endoscopy (as a gold test) then it's gluten free diet (a whole new world)! Hope this is useful. |

| i had that once, where my jaw hurt as well (i had mouth ulcers at the time) it was really bizarre, as i only had it that one time, never before or since, but still getting mouth ulcers ALL the time. sorry this doesnt really help very much, i just had it that one time, after a week or so it disappeared....so far i havent found anything that really works for mouth ulcers, bonjela is only good if you have only one or two, and anyway i think touching the ulcers like that might make them spread, i don't know. And Listerine works for about 10 mins.............. |
| rebecca 16 June 09 |

|
| I definitely suffer badly from ulcers when tired/stressed and so generally run down. I also end up with raw raw lips, cracked dry and bleeding I think from holding my mouth slightly open from the discomfort. I've got listerene and it provides some temporary relief. How quickly should an ulcer on average clear up and is there anything I could be eating/drinking to aggrevate them? |
| Simon 16 June 09 |

|
| Some of you are describing what I had for 7 years. Its called Bechets Syndrome, can be linked to Lupus. This goes with tiredness, sore unseen patches on the skin, joint pain and if in the eyes, can lead to blindness. Should go to Doctors, not just guess its an ordinary mouth ulcer, especially if you get a few genital ulcers or one or so in your eyes. The best ever medicine I used, but you need a prescription, was an ointment called Kenalog in Orobase. It killed the pain and did clear the existing ulcer quicker than anything else. Before I found it, I used to stay up all night swabbing genital and mouth with Bi-carbinate of soda mixed with water, which does take the burn away for a while. Its good to bath in it too if you have genital ulcers. I am a Christian and the Lord healed me. Haven't had any for 24 years. |

| Hello World Wide to fellow ulcer sufferers. Firstly I have no cure.... sorry... but if I did I would make a fortune by selling it believe me. I live in Australia, have suffered with bad ulcers since my teens, now 38 and they are still affecting me regularly. I do have some observations and suggestions though 1. if I drink fruit juice or eat citrus of any kind- guaranteed one week later i develop ulcers. 2. The worst things to eat or drink when you have ulcers are bananas, obviously fruit, and everything else.... especially very sweet things and plain water- i find this the most excruciating pain of all. 3. I find the ulcers are worst in the mid-afternoon and the evenings. Particularly bad when the saliva has sat in your mouth for a long time and they ache and throb and hurt. For this I do support the use of mouthwash or salt water, because at least keeping the mouth clean is a start. My glands swell and ache if it is on my lower mouth and my teeth get sore if they are on my gums. If they are on my throat my ear aches on that side and overall I just feel miserable 4. I did have some luck many years ago with a naturopath who gave me some mineral supplements. I also had a vitamin B injection which seemed to help another time. I don't think it is enough to have just vitamin tablets because the levels are not high enough. I do believe in zinc supplements because they are essential for healing - my biggest issue is not the ulcer, but the time they take to run their course- up to two weeks. If I only had them for 3 days I could cope much better.5. SIMON - try putting Lanolin on your lip at night time to stop them drying out, this will help to stop the cracked lip, and keep a vaseline chapstick handy for during the day. I have been on a roll lately with many on my bottom lip, tongue and throat- while writing this I have about 6 from the front of my mouth to the back. I eat a healthy diet with nothing in excess. I think the most awful thing is that the pain can be all consuming and you cannot function properly , and I am open to admit that the little craters have reduced me to tears several times because of the incessant pain over a week or so.They put me in a foul mood and I now resort to moderate pain killers at night time and I am about to crank up my zinc tablets again and probably trot off to the naturopath to start again. Other than that I am working away on figuring out how to come up with a band-aid for the mouth. Best wishes to you all , just writing to people who understand has made me feel better. |

Hi all,
Been getting mouth ulcers all my life, one or two at a time, and only recently I realised that they regularly appear after eating out. I suppose the hygene in restaurants is not all that great here, hence the ulcer attacks.
The effective cure in my case is propolis tincture. Just put a couple of drops of it on an ear cotton bud and smear it over sore spots. They go away within less than 24 hrs.

Hey Alice 8th may 09, what you had there sounds similar to the pain i was getting. a throbbing pain all round the top of my mouth as if someone was drilling into the bone plus severe tension pains in the cheek bones. it passed after a week but dentists, doctors, etc had no idea what was causing it. Thoughts where inflamation of the sinuses, take plenty ibuprofen and codeine based pain killers are good.
On another note im a trumpet player doing a festival run playing everynight for 16 nights, the ulcers i get as a result are brought on by, lack of sleep, drinking and smoking (burn from the smoke can damage the back of the lips and leave way to ulcers forming). been doing the usual of rinsing the mouth out with warm salt water, bonjella type stuff and also using cold sore cream for ulcers forming on fronts of the lips. could do with something thats just gonna burn the wee feckers of.
seen a few possible ideas on this site so will try them.
Thanks for reading the rant. |

| I have just put the Myrrh on and will see what happens. My GP in Switzerland told me about it. I have had them for the last 8 weeks due to radiation therapy and managed to keep them under control by gargling 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in 1 cup of water. Actual ulcers were treated with tenderdol gel. That stings like mad but stops them growing and multiplying. I have one "street" left at the back of my throat (new ones not so painful) and am trying Myrrh on that. |

Hi!
Can someone else plz try this and see if it works for you to? Someone suggested tea to me. So i tried it. I had a giant ulcer at the back/side of my throat. I couldnt eat or sleep. And swallowing almost put me in tears. It came up two days ago. And yesterday i was in the worst pain. Sore neck, ear and back all on the same side as the ulcer. Last night i went to starbucks with some friends and got a tea. I got a Berry Blossom Tazo white tea. With two teabags and some honey. Last night i slept so good! And this morning i had the tiniest bit of pain. So i had another tea this morning. Now this afternoon i am totally painfree! No pain, No ulcer. So i had a massive meal!
Hope this helps atleast someone else.
Goodluck!

| I really thought I was one of the only ones (except my mum) who got as many and as painful ulcers as me. This website is great as now I know I am not alone. I am also going to try this Myrrh stuff. The best thing I have tried is orabase paste. You have to use at night as it sticks like glue to the ulcers and glues your gums and teeth together! It does work though and they usually start healing after about three nights. You can buy it over the counter for about £4 so not too bad although it's in a very small tube so if you have 5 at a time, you need to buy a new tube for every outbreak. Thanks for the advice anyway! |

Hi there - currently got 9 (usually average 1 or 2 a week, this is a bad dose). I have done the diary thing and now know that 3 days after a big weekend, or a party, I get an outbreak. Now, I am not going to stop having a social life, but I am going to try to rehydrate myself before going to bed when I've had a few beers in the hope of sleeping better. Friends who are doctors have told me that people get them for different reasons, so no one remedy works for everyone. It's trial and error I'm afraid! There is a Colgate mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide in it now which helps with healing as it dissolves the white stuff on the top of the ulcer. "Bonjela once" sticks (containing sulphuric acid) do work if you only have one at a time, but hurts like nothing on earth to apply and expensive, so not good for ongoing problems. Orabase does help but its steroid based so not ideal for long-term use.
Try one thing at a time and give it a chance to work before moving on to the next thing, otherwise you will be spending £100's on loads of things and not know which one is actually helping!
Good luck everyone - it actually really helps to know others understand - I get so angry with people who say "Have you tried Bonjela?" too! Like spitting on an inferno....

As i am reading your coments, tears are roling down my face,i am 37 with same problem since i was a kid, i did try every single thing, doctors, dentists, oral bases. citrus is terrible for me as if i eat a piece of melon, pineaple or tomato, just in few hours i have one for sure, this week i have the worse one ever, just at the side of my tongue, is so big as i cant talk,or eat, i am taking ibuprofen every 5 hours,
i am so miserable,i just dont know what to do. |

| I found that a little pot of multivitamins from Boots costing 99p relieved me of mouth ulcers for an amazing 8 weeks. I thought i'd found my miracle cure. Then, whilst on holiday in sunny Egypt i was cruelly attacked with three mega painful ones. It ruined the holiday, my girlfriend thinks im being a pathetic fool. On the plane on the way home my mouth swelled up like crazy, does altitude affect ulcers? At least i've found out what Myrrh is after all these years. Would it be too zany to put it on my Christmas list? |

| I got some Squigle toothpaste in July and I am just so thrilled. Immediately my mouth got better and I hardly have an ulcer now. I just havea slightly sore tongue on the edges. Also I have bought some soap without SLS and my skin which was bumpy with sort of under the skin spots is so much better. I am so thrilled. Everyone should try it. I am not a solicited ad for the remedy toothpaste I can promise - I just am a completely amazed and orginally sceptical person in Johannesburg!. |

Hi there Carol
I too have been using free SRL mouthwash for 4 weeks Sensodyne blue gel and cannot beleive the difference, I have now introduced some citrus fruits etc as I blamed the fruit and other foods but I think now the reala culprit is the toothpaste, long may it continue to work as like you I still have bumpy skin in my inner cheeks but hopefully in time that will disappear. I was spending a fortune on unneccesary stuff which never worked.
Best of luck

| We always had Tincture of myrhh in my house when i was growing up. Every time I got a mouth ulcer, my dad would dip a Q tip in it and apply it directly to the ulcer. Burned like a bugger for about 3 seconds then.....ulcer GONE. I wasn even sure you could still GET IT. In MY day it was sold at the chemists....... |

I read that any type of mouthwash can stop bacteria for a very short time, however, it will be back in the mouth with a greater force. So when we have mouth ulcer, it suggested we don't use mouthwash. Who knows...

| I think eating chewy/sticky foods i.e chocolate and sweets when you have mouth ulcers is suicide. The mechanical chewing and 'scraping' of the food (especially choclate) is going to aggrivate them like buggery |

whoa... so many people have described what I've been thinking and I too feel better knowing I'm not alone. I'm 21 & in Australia and tomorrow I will be searching high and low for tincture of Myrrh & squigle toothpaste as they seem to be the 2 things mentioned a lot that I haven't yet tried. I have always suffered badly from ulcers, and I currently have 14. I got braces on last week which has just made this lot so much more painful. I have cried myself to sleep for nearly a week after taking painkillers, which I normally refuse to take.
Kate - I loved your comment about bonjela.. 'have you tried bonjela?' haahaha.. you're right. what a joke. idiots.
and yes to all those people who said they feel like a drama queeen when they have ulcers. They really do control my life which sucks.
Thanks for your help guys. I hope that some of your advice works for me!!

Hi everyone ... wow, I thought I was bad - I usually get 6 ulcers at a time. So fellow sufferers - we are bonded in spirit - to all of you out there who have more than 6 at a time, I really salute you. You have my respect and highest regard for having developed the awesome character quality of "longsuffering".
I get the damned sores when I overwork, or after a stressful period (work, juggling family demands), and especially when I don't drink enough water, and don't get enough sleep each night. Whenever I eat out I request "no MSG" added into foods coz that for me is a sure cause.
Recently my son had a very bad bout of eczema and I found this naturopath that was a tremendous help (don't go to doctors or dermatogolists for help with eczema - they are useless), this guy helped 'cure' my son of his incredibly loud snoring too. Anyway, the 'cure' was really a complete overhaul of my son's diet, and extra supplements. Basically my son was to avoid all foods with wheat, gluten, sugar, dairy, yeast. No coffee, no spicy salty or sour foods, no fried greasy fatty foods. Lots of vegies, fruit, water, quinoa, meat and fish, eggs. He was deficient in zinc, iron, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin B too so he had to take supplements for all that. It was a completed 'natural' and healthy diet. Poor chap had to go on a crash course fast with NO chips, no chocolate, no cakes, basically no 'rubbish' foods, and I had to read the ingredients label for everything before purchasing. It was tough. But what I discovered in that time was NO ULCERS for me!!! coz naturally, I ate what I cooked up for my son.
After 7 weeks on that diet, my son's skin condition improved / healed completely so we let him back onto all kinds of foods, including 'rubbish' foods. Naturally I ate 'rubbish' foods too ... and so returned ULCERS! I now have 4 - 2 on the tongue and 1 on the left upper lip and 1 at the back of my mouth. I can't speak properly (which affects work coz I consult with clients everyday) and basically I am in constant pain (in the mouth and in the head - the ulcers give me throbbing headaches!).
I think I am going back to that naturopath-prescribed diet (which is the proper healthy diet anyway), and take multivitamin and mineral supplements, zinc liquid, and I'm definitely going to look for MYRRH. Allum powder and garlic and associated pain ... hmm ... already in so much pain, can't bear to go through some more ... |

Hello everyone
This has to be the single most useful website for mouth ulser sufferers on the net. Ive been bugged by ulsers for the past 6years. I read an article about SLS in toothpaste being a possible cause, Ive changed my toothpaste to sensodyne gentle whitening and the ulsers only last 3-5 days instead of 3-4 weeks. Also I only discovered Adcortyl (which is fantastic) a few months ago and now when I need it I cant get it, gutted!
The indian food post from earlier in this thread sparked a memory from years ago though. When i had an ulser if i had a curry chip from the local chippy, it hurt (nothing new there) but it was pretty much gone the next day. Does anyone have a lead on this?
Many thanks to whoever set this site up. Thanks

Take a fresh clove and chew it a bit to break it up and shove it right on the ulcer.

I've found that raw tomatoes bring on ulcers. I've been taking Chinese Herbs for 1 year and my 10 year blight of Mouth ulcers has been almost cured.
Nowadays they come and go but do not grow and hurt for weeks. It's a different life! |
| Matt Gale 4 August 10 |

Hi there
my doctor said to me that tomatoes and strawberries were one of the high suspect fruits that cause ulcers due to them being highly acidic, I usually avoid citrus food but tonight I had brown sauce on my dinner and guess what, almost an immediate reaction and awaiting a canker ulcer or two in the morning*** and when I checked the ingredients of sauce it contained 'tomato paste' ..honestly it is so difficult with all the hidden ingredients. Canna win!! |
| Scotty 4 August 10 |

|
What Chinese herbs are you taking, and how much of each? I've had acupuncture for a long time now, and I thought it was working, but, suddenly I have a new tongue sore starting and a couple inner lip cankers giving me major pain.
I thought gluten intolerance was a likely cause, but I've been off wheat/gluten for a while now, and still, these things keep comin.
It's so weird...sometimes I'll go for 2 weeks without, and I feel great, then all of a sudden, my mouth is on fire and everything goes down hill. I had a reprieve when I stumbled on turmeric, and it helped heal a tongue sore in a day, but it doesn't seem to do anything for the cankers...and now I'm not even sure if it's working on the tongue. |
| Tony 11 August 10 |

Hi Tony,
I'm taking a mixture of herbs, prescribed by my herbalist. I don't know what it contains (there are many names, all are Chinese)) nothing outrageous like crushed Seahorse or the like- I’m assured).
My Herbalist is from North London, Marina Mitko. She's been really helpful, I recently accompanied her to meet her Tutor (as the ulcers have reduced but are not yet cured) who prescribed a different combination; first to cleanse then to -hopefully- cure. The cleansing has brought back a fair few ulcers and it really reminds me of how bad it used to be. But for all the time I was taking the previous prescription I had no painful outbreaks.
I've tried to isolate possible nutritional causes without much success, but I know raw tomatoes and lots of sugar defiantly contribute. Regular exercise helps to prevent outbreaks, I think. But as you seem to have found certainties are difficult to come by.
Good luck, Matt. |
| Matt Gale 13 August 10 |

| "I'm taking a mixture of herbs, prescribed by my herbalist. I don't know what it contains"... sorry Matt, but, that's really lame. |
| Angry Jedd 14 August 10 |

Hey everybody,
Yikes! I have the most painful ulcer on the roof of my mouth. I can't eat, drink, etc.etc. Just returned from few days away w/ friends......too much drinking, eating lots of spicy spicy foods, yummy rich desserts, snacks.....all the usual vacation stuff. I was tremendously stressed prior to leaving for a variety of reasons. So, on the day coming back from the vacation I got the bad ulcer, plus flu-like symptoms. I'm so tired I can barely move. Achy, and depressed. This is the third day. I went out immediately and got a bunch of stuff I saw on this site. So far not much relief. Even w/ the miracle myrrh. I've tried the honey. I've tried the soda & salt. I've tried the mixture of Malox & Benydryl mixture for mouth rinse. Maybe I'm trying too many things, but I'm in pain and misery. So, how long should it take to go away using the Myrrh? I make a mouth rinse out of it, as well as applying it directly on the sore. OUCH. (by the way, how often should I be doing that?) I'm tempted to do it once every couple of hours. Is that ok to be doing? I hate not being able to have a glass of wine. I've been forced to switch to White Russians. ha ha. |
| Cin 16 August 10 |

|
Jedd: It's an individual diagnosis. Even if I were to ask my herbalist, the listed herbs would not appropriate for others without consultation. And besides 'Angry Jedd', my advice is go see a herbalist, acupuncture didn't work for me Chinese Herbs did. In a big way!
Frankly any suggestion I’ve made is better than the dull statement that an attempt at a helpful suggestion is 'lame'. For petty bickering head to You Tube, if you have a suggestion of how to cure ulcers, or would like clarification of someone else’s suggestion your in the right place.

| I have found that changing my toothpaste to on ethat doesn't contain sls (sodium laurel sulphate) has helped a lot. That is a chemical that makes the toothpaste foam, but many people are sensitive to it, and it can contribute to the ulcers. I decreased my outbreaks immensley by changing toothpastes. Tom's of Maine makes a good-tasting SLS free toothpaste. I read up on the Internet and it says that food allergies are a very common cause. I have found that I am wheat intolerant. If I keep wheat out of my diet and use SLS free toothpast, I don't get canker sores at all! However, eating wheat makes me get them sometimes but not as much as when I didn't use sls free toothpaste. |
| Lisa 18 August 10 |

|
| Matt: Sorry no offence intended, you hadn't said that the mixture is made up for each individual diagnosis. That's quite an interesting approach, and very different to the western norm, that is one-size-fits-all. How does one find a reputable herbalist? |
| Jedd (not particularly angry today) 19 August 10 |

|
Jedd: Sorry I got a bit excited in my last post. I found my herbalist by Googling for the closest and cheapest practitioner accredited by the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine. From my experience I'd avoid highstreet options (Dr Herbs ect) I tried that a few years back, it cost alot and did nothing.
A month's supply of herbs (which come in powder form) now is about £15, consultation fee is not much more. If you happen to live in London my herbalist is Marina Mitko who has been incredibly helpful. Unfortunately I doubt Chinese herbs will work for everyone but after 10 years of ulcers it's the only thing that has worked effectively for me. Good luck, Matt. |
