what food causes them for you 26 messages in this subject Twitter

i have one on the bit of skin that connectes my gum to my lip it hurts so bad no medicne works for me but i want to know what food causes them for you?

Well I have narrowed my Mouth Ulcers down to quite a number of things. Still boggles my mind that doctors dont know what the cause is or what the solution is. I have lived with these beasties all my life really really terrible.

My Potential Causes.

Acidic Foods - Tomato Based foods (Really frustrtating as I love Tomatoes so much), Vinegars, Very hot chilli (I also love chilli), Red Wine which I stay very far away from as that is a definite cause for me and when my immune system hits a bit of a low through lack of sleep or just too much work.

I have found that Zinc Lozengers numb the pain nicely and speed up the healing process. Anyone else have similar causes?

What foods cause them for me.

Everything except Safflower , Sunflower, and Olive Oils; almonds, and protein powder (whey, egg white, or soy).

As far as I can tell anything with gluten (wheat, barley, rye and their derivatives... including malt :( ) in it as that decreases my general health. And when I have them I seem to dislike anything very acidic such as orange juice.

Stay away from Burger King.

Ditto on gluten for me. Also couldn’t drink any beer until I found Budweiser’s Redbridge gluten-free beer that is pretty tasty. Can’t take NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Ibuprofen and aspirin.

My neice’s problem is a severe allergy to apples. :o(

How about whey? Never even thought of the stuff until I keep seeing it crop in the food I think help cause mine - particularly ”low-fat” products for those of us trying not to be blubber whales.

I have found that anything I eat seems to aggravate them but being diabetic I have to eat and have been living on Potatoes porridge and rice for the last six weeks as the thing just wont heal

Chocolate doed it for me - I can eat an occasional small amount, but if I eat too much my mouth starts to feel sort of itchy, and I know that ulcers will be appearing before much longer. Not sure if tomatoes cause them for me, but anything tomatoey is certainly agony to eat once they're there!

I'm finding that almost anythng I put in my mouth casues me problems.

This is so unfunny. We just think we can eat what we like, but we can't! It's horrid! My tongue feels like it's electrified.

I hate this. I can't even eat a Hob Nob biscuit!
Tim Suffering 28 February 09

for me it's soy....which is difficult to digest. according to oriental medicine mouth ulcers is caused by food that is not digested well. when the ulcer is there spicy and acidic food just makes them worse but they are not the cause for me.

Gluten for me (wheat, rye and barley) always causes one. Salty snacks can also cause one for me.
TomF 6 April 09

I find any fizzy sweets cause my mouth ulcers!!
Jen 7 April 09

I have a whole host of things..... wine - within 24 hours. vinegar, e250 AND E251 preservatives, too much hot milk, too much sugar, processed, as opposed to home made bread.

However, I'm a good news story. Having seen this fantastic site, I changed my toothpaste, have started using lysine and vitamn B12 500mg tablets, and I've only had one since Christmas - brought on by wine!!!!

The motto of the story is to eat fresh food, and avoid acidic foods

I am going to try natural wines next

Tomatoes, Tomatoes, Tomatoes.
Plus some other things that I haven't worked out yet.
So painful and annoying. I feel them coming on but it seems I can do nothing to stop them.
They last for about 2 weeks. Sometimes only one, but often 2 or 3.

An update from me..... I am still watching what I eat and taking the vitamins etc. Lattes give me mouth ulcers as do spicy food. And when I decide I want cakes or if I am run down (a cold, stress etc).

At least I know what causes each ulcer I get now - and thankfully there arent that many now.... fingers crossed

Five years ago I got a blood test for food intolerance which showed an immune reaction to dairy, yeast, and Benzoates. I have had other problems as well which are also sorted since i cut out dairy and most yeasty things.
I use McLeans toothpaste because most contain benzoates. They occur naturally in red and purple fruits and vegetables but i don't avoid all of them because it would make my diet harder to cope with. I avoid juice from concentrate, as they can contain benzoates that aren't mentioned on the label.
I have been dairy free for nearly five years and cut out most yeast, i only have bread now and again, and brewed drinks are a no go. Since cutting out wine it now gives me a rash and a week and a half later an apthous ulcer. Haven't therefore drank any in a few years. Sorry to be long winded about this. My life now is incomparable to what it used to be when i ate dairy and yeast containing foods. I hardly have any ulcers and if i do get one they don't last long like they used to. I attribute the occasional one now to eating bread now and again. I also do not get a cold every few weeks.

These little germs are terrorists. They must have been sent by Bin Lad din as a part of his biological warfare against the west. My mouth ulcers are agonizing, especially the ones on my tongue. The tongue ones are almost invisible, but boy they are awful. I do not know as yet what cause them. I have been trying by a process of elimination to detect and destroy these vermin.

I have a friend who gets mouth ulcers whenever she takes food that contains chilli. She suffers a lot from it. Can anyone with a similar problem let me know how she or he deals with it? I am from Malacca, Malaysia. I can be contacted at jeya1545@yahoo.com.
