I have been using Listerine for about a fortnight perhaps slightly excessively as I thought it may act as a cleaning agent for my teeth during the day. I'm a smoker. Also I'd heard that it could numb the pain of tooth ache. Unfortunately I've started to develop mouth ulcers which are incredibly painful and uncomfortable. I'm now wondering if these could be related.

I've been using listerene total care to ease a tooth ache an I've use 2 1\2 bottles in two days..I've been rinseing 25 to 30 times a day but in verey small amounts how likely is it that'll i ll get cancer from it

I used Listerine 2x's for 30 seconds each yesterday and it stung. Had to flush mouth with water right after using it both times. This morning I woke up to the awful taste of blood in my mouth and it was dark in color and got about a teaspoon on my sheets. Went to sink and spit and it was black in color and as I flushed the dark stuff with water from the sink and it turned red. Today I have a few sores in my mouth. They are dark purple and they are on my left cheek. they are not bleeding but are painful and I am worried that I will awaken to more dark blood in my mouth this evening or in the morning. Worried. Stopped listerine and am now using salt rinse. SHOULD I seek medical advice? Please advise. Thanks very much.

I am seeing this I believe because I never used the mouthwash plus I did not use after brush but before. I think it dried my lips inside tomorrow need go to dentist been years.

Listerine should come with a HUGE warning label: Likely to cause excruciating mouth ulcers. Why this product is still on the shelf is amazing. I used Listerine and started getting ulcers on my tongue, especially the bottom of my tongue where the Listerine was in greater contact during the swishing (a puddle basically remained constant on the bottom of my mouth). At first I didnʻt connect the problem to the Listerine, thinking it might have been some hot food that I ate a few days before, but that didnʻt make sense. So naively I was rinsing further with the Listerine as some websites suggest you should keep the sores clean and that Listerine would be a good antiseptic for that purpose. Now that the Listerine has exacerbated the problem, I'm certain it was the initial cause. NEVER AGAIN. I'm throwing the bottle away.

I used listerin total care the purple one. It burned my bottom gums with ulcers. It has been about 5 days and I still cannot eat or drink anything without excruciating pain. I can't open my mouth wide enough and I bleed when I just brush my teeth . It's the holidays and I have to wait until it's over. My lower jaw is totally swollen and have been feeling dizzy lately. I noticed that sucrets lonsenges helps numb the pain. I am now starting to get pain to my jaw bones which worries me. So I bought the sucrets spray to try to heal the ulcers. I've noticed if I applied ice packs for my jaw seems to help temporarily.

I used Colgate mouthwash and after one week there were ulcers on my tongue...staying away from all types of mouthwashes now. Maybe salt water is a better alternative.

I used listerine pocketmist twice and got sores in my mouth.
It's very strong and impossible to dilute. The spray is such a small amount you can't hardly feel it hitting the inside of your mouth. But wow is it strong!

It's any product with whitening properties and bleaching agents. Some of us can't take it. I saw a doc last night as my tongue started to feel like it was burning, like it does when you drink something too hot, and from the back and down my throat it felt dry and irritated and it was coated. But last night, the front part of my tongue had a tingling feeling and was sensitive. She looked up the label and was sure it was the Listerine Total Care my dentist had me swish with a week ago at my appt. She said the reaction can take days to happen. I felt like that was a stretch but she was sure of it when she saw whitening agents in the ingredients and hydrogen peroxide which is a bleaching agent and she wasn't thrilled about the sodium laurel stearate either, which has been a controversial ingredient in many things. She said to tell the dentist NO THANKS! I was prescribed a rinse to use to ease the discomfort.

I have tried to use the new Listerene Whitening Mouthwash (bottle with all the red lips on it). I can't. It really felt like I was rinsing my mouth with paint stripper. I am in awe of these people that seem to have iron cast mouths that can rinse with anything. It left my lips, tongue and gums with what looked like
blister burns. I have even tried watering it down, but after a couple of days my mouth and tongue are so sore from erupting ulcers, I have to stop. Surely rinsing with mouthwash should not be this difficult or painful. I have found one that I like and it feels smooth and nice in my mouth. Dentyl.

I have used Act Restoring mouthwash for 5 days and masses of ulcers have developed in my mouth and on my tongue. Listerine did this 2 years ago. I will not use anything except warm salt water from now on...this is miserable!!!

I was taking Malarone anti-malaria pills on holiday and my bottom lip swelled up for a few days - I looked like a duck. My inside lip was completely dry and grey inside and painful to smile or eat as it was so cracked. Assumed it was Malarone but now reading this, I had been taking non-alcoholic Listerine every day whilst on holiday and seems it could be this and not the Malarone. I did actually stop the listerine when it happened but still didnt know which it was. Has anyone else had this. Thank u.

Ellie - Gengigel Rinse would be my top recommend for what you describe. As far as I know it is readily available, or by mail-order from the shop.

I used a off brand for Listerine Total Care Mouth Wash for two days. I rinsed for a little over 1 min the second day! Completely burned my entire mouth! I ended up with many small painful white soars over my soft tissues of my mouth! My entire mouth was extremely soar and raw! I developed large painful blister like ulcer on the underside of my lips that made it hard for me to smile or make facial expressions! My lips and the inside of my mouth itch! And my bottom lip swoll up, looking a bit like a stuffed sausage! Still no real relief after 2 days!

Interesting to see so many people suffering from this. Listerine causes really painful ulcers every time I use it. I never put the two together until recently

Hi, I used Colgate total white toothpaste which contains SLS and had really bad ulcers for about a month, I struggled to eat and drink.
Avoid at all costs, horrible stuff, should be banned.

Donna, try a Chlorhexidine mouthwash, I personally had bad experiences with Listerine as well...

Wow this is Krazy. I have been using this stuff for over a month now. First I thought I had a cold throat killing me, that's went away a little bit,but the inside of my mouth behind my lips have been killing me for over 3 weeks now. I have cracked lips the sides of my mouth are cracked. Just tonight me and my daughter went out to dinner and out of nowhere she says I can't eat my soup I have little blisters in my mouth, then she says I wonder if it could be the toothpaste or that mouth wash I've been using everyday like me. It has to be that listerine. I've stopped using it as of 3 nights ago but my mouth is still killing me. This stuff is like poison if it's doing this to everyone. It has to be the problem, god I hope my mouth gets back to normal.
Donna 30 September 15
i heard listerine works best watered down but it still burns when i use it.

Listerine Total Care (the purple one) has Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (LSL) which has been known to cause canker sores. I just figured this out and will have to use a different listerine variety now.
Finally Looked it Up 7 August 15
Yes I have a very sore mouth after using Listerine last night. I thought the burning sensation as it was in my mouth was killing germs, but in reality it was causing burns inside my mouth! I sure hope I'll be back to normal in a few day. I find it difficult to eat also.

I changed from listerene to Crest Pro Health Complete Rinse , and found out I was allergic to it.(that is what my dentist says)
It started the next day, and 4 days after I used it, my mouth is still hurting, it attacked the inside wall of my mouth and gums, tongue, and underneath my tongue it is swollen and very sore.
The roof is ok, but never again will I use this mouthwash .
Back to listerine.

i suddenly have a bad case of ulcers under my tongue....used to get 1 or 2 maybe about once in 5 years...but this time there are about 10 to 12 of them under my tongue....and i realized that i just changed my mouth wash from colgate plax to listerine cavity fighter mouthwash...i am sure this is the culprit.
k nagesh 10 August 14
I gave Listerine a try as it was on offer. I wish i had read the label as after a few uses i have lots of small ulcers. The mouthwash contains SLS and i am convinced that i what makes me break out. I will be switching back to Corsodyl daily

MarkH 4 June 14
I have blisters on my tongue and smaller blisters inside my mouth since I started to use Listerine Total Care 3 weeks ago. Initially when I started to use it I found it very very strong but just about tolerable. The blisters are really sore, came up 2 days ago and not getting better. Have stopped using Listerine; obviously! because if I did my mouth would be like a volcano. Sean, Ireland.
Sean 1 June 14
My tongue is burning since I used it. It should have a warning on it. I'm surprised that people actually use it.
harjeet 1 May 14
Yes. Used listerine mouthwash just once and got ulcers on end of my tongue. Giving a dry but burning sensation. Won't be using again after reading all these comments. Should have warning on the bottle !!
Juniper 28 March 14
Glad to know I'm not the only one. My mouth is burning and I'm in pain since using Listerine Total Care. I feel stupid because I bought a huge 3-pack at Sam's Club! I'll rinse with ward afterwards instead of allowing it to be the final rinse.
JaneInPain:( 25 January 14
Yes, mouth ulcers from Listerine Total Care. Used it twice, second time being 5 days ago and still have the blisters at the bottom of my gums. Used peroxide as a rinse today and it seems to have helped.
