Pineapples as a cause

I have had ulcers as long as I can remember, as did my father and grandmother. I do think it is in the genes. I have just got back from a wonderful holiday in Indo China. Fabulous food, but eating was made difficult by a bad out break of mouth ulcers. The fruit, especially pineapple was superb, and at the start of the holiday I was eating it at least twice a day, but once the ulcers started it was just too painful to eat pineapple, so I cut it out and the ulcers died down. I came home ulcer free, and ate pineapple as an experiment and within 12 hours three mouth ulcers had erupted. I am off pineapple!

Pineapples are a bugger for too - gives me mouth ulcers and starts my Crohnís Disease off.......I definately avoid them as I do peanuts which do the same.

Pineapples, nice as they are, do seem to be bad for ulcers.

Good to know I am not alone, and as I am still suffering from THE worst ulcer I have ever had I do not need to try pineapple one more time just to make sure that is the cause.

well that is what started this 10 yrs of suffering for me and 12 doctors laters I am getting some results.I went to an Infectious desease doctor and she gave me acyclovi 400 mg but when she reduced the mg to 200 it started to activate again.I see her on march 26th.But yes a pineapple is what started this 10 yrs ago this coming June.I often wonder if there was some sort of desease on the pineapple b/c for the longest time I chalked it up to,too much acid. But I had mouthful of ulcers and all I heard from these idiot doctors was that it was from oral sex.1.I am not having any sex at all (nothing to brag about) 2 if that was the case the entire homosexual community would have it.These doctors are really dumb. They are just lazy and donít want to look into anything other than their dirty minds.I am so disgusted.I think if oral sex was the cuprit,I think if I was having sex,I would have enough common sex to stop doing it.It was degrading going to doctor to doctor and than on top of it all.It made me so depressed but not as much as those ulcers, they feel like they are eating your flesh away.It is just a nawing pain of where it makes you eyes water.Sleep was my only comfort

Hi all, just had pineapple with salt & pepper few days a go. The next morning found my mouth soar and painful when eating or drinking. Have been told that this is due to high level of acidity in the fruit. But sress can be a cause as well. Thankyou everybody for sharing your knowledge, it helps greatly. Cheers

Yes Pineapples generate more heat within the body and generate mouth ulcers..Sometimes I cant resist to the flavour and the taste of it and will have only few pieces, waking up with an ulcer..I was told by a herbal doctor whom I visited months ago to take pineapple raw or juice with honey, which will prevent ulcers...I am yet to test this out....

I had a friend who used to work in a pineapple processing plant in Hawaii. He said pineapple juice was the most acidic of all juices and they must be completely covered with thick vinyl or rubber from head to toe to keep from getting burned from the pineapples......think about it. I knew from the past I could not take Vitamin C because it gave me mouth ulcers. Recently, I started taking B-complex which has Vit C, My cran-cherry and cran-pomergranet had 100% Vit C, I was drinking pineapple mixed drink, lemon water and oil and vinegar dressing. I guess I shocked my system.I
Anyeay, I stopped all of the above and started eating yogurt, Tums and green tea with honey. My daughter made me an essential oil roll on for wounds and it is helping.

Any time I want to eat anything acidic, including pineapple, I always use L-Lysine 2000mg 2-3 times a day , then I just cut the dose back to 2000mg daily for about 2 weeks.

If you've ever eaten a pineapple, you'll have experienced that weird, scratchy, rough feeling on your tongue after you've munched through a few chunks. So why does that happen?

It turns out that pineapple contains bromelain, a mixture of enzymes that digest proteins. Despite bromelain being an approved anti-inflammatory treatment and having other health benefits, when it comes into contact with the sensitive skin in and around one's mouth, it's actually breaking down proteins, causing the tissue to become sore and inflamed.

Effects of Bromelain

Pineapple contains a substance called bromelain that actually breaks down proteins, which is why it's sometimes used as a meat tenderizer. If your mouth gets sore after eating pineapple or drinking fresh pineapple juice, it may be because the bromelain started breaking down the proteins that make up your mouth. The enzymes in your stomach break down the bromelain, which is why your mouth is usually the only part of your digestive tract affected this way. Your mouth and cheeks may even swell if you eat too much pineapple.

I found if I leave the fresh pineapple out till it turns completely yellow it is not acidic. The other day I went to a church supper and now have a huge ulcer on my lip. Extremely painful and ugly. I also take blood thinners and found out it's very bad when mixed with blood thinners. I don't get sores when I let it turn completely yellow.

I made a fruit salad, strawberries, caned pineapple and bananas , next day woke up very fatigued and sore taste buds and sore gums. Ugh! no more pineapple, even caned! Thank you everyone for sharing. I even read where one person had the problem with caned pineapple just like me.

I think I HV a cure for mouth ulcer. Got it from pineapple. Immediately after the breakout, I started rubbing my tounge over it regularly, kinda like pushing it back with my tounge. It stopped expanding further after a few days, and died without much damage. I just had it today and will try again, let's up it works again.

I am so grateful for this message board. I broke out with an ulcer 2 days ago...clueless why. Just had 1 cup of pineapple with lunch...bam!...3 ulcers on my lips developed, which prompted me to look up allergic reactions. Good bye pineapple!!!!

Just found out that pineapples has been causing me 15 years of mouth ulcer pain. To do with the enzyme Bromelain ( a meat tenderiser) in Pineapple. Goodbye pineapple and mouth ulcers. TF for that!

I have this sore on the side of my mouth after eating pineapple. It's annoying, I can't eat properly cause its scabbing and whenever I try to take a bite it stretches and tears open the soar. I look like I have herpes. Has anyone experience this? (I don't have herpes, by the way lol)

Wow. After a bit of logical deduction and with the help of this site it turns out pineapple is the culprit. I accidentally swallowed some lake water Friday and felt a bit peaky Saturday - mild head cold symptoms. I had a fresh pineapple on hand and ate the whole thing Sunday thinking nice fresh fruit would get my immune system firing. Monday two canker sores opened up and my gums were badly swollen and chewed up by the bromelain in it (it turns out). Wednesday now and mouth still on fire. I've eaten raw pineapple many times before so can only infer that it was the fact my immune system had already taken a hit after swallowing lake water that led to the canker sores / swollen gums. But would I ever risk this level of pain and discomfort again to enjoy a bit of pineapple? No way. Thanks for all the helpful comments.

I have been eating pineapple daily for the last three months because of digestive problems and it worked but at the same time I have had extremely sore gums (I have lichum plants which causes sore gums anyway) Looks like the pineapple made it worse as they are much worse now so I will stop eating it, thank you
