For all those having issues.....do your research. There are three parts that can be used for clove oil (leaf, bud, or stem) If you get pure essential clove BUD oil (therapeutic grade) then it is one that causes the least irritation on skin. clove BUD oil is best for skin. Also.....YOU NEED TO DILUTE IT!! You should not be putting pure oil on it.

I got my wisdom teeth extracted and got dry socket. They used a clove oil dressing on my dry socket and it felt batter for a day. The next day my cheek was covered in HUGE ulcers, and was almost as painful as the dry socket.

I get mouth ulcers when I bite my lip. I tried clove oil on it and it burns. The numb feeling that comes after lasts for about 5 minutes and it hurts again. It doesn't feel like it does any healing on my ulcer. I also have Celiac Disease and that makes all my epithelial layers including the skin and digestive linings more sensitive. When I read up on clove oil it cautioned how strong it was and that people with sensitive skin should not use clove oil, however, I find that rubbing a little clove oil on the bottom of my feet can boost my immunity a little. Clove oil has many other benefits that can be read about on other websites.

You're not supposed to use the essential oil version of clove oil. You can get clove oil for toothaches at some drug stores or on online. I was confused when I first learned about it a few months ago, and I thought I was supposed to use the essential oil. But I found a "toothache kit" that included the right kind of clove oil. Look for the "Red Cross Toothache Kit." Do a web search for it. I had a hard time finding it in a drug store. I don't remember where I found it. I think Walgreen's was willing to order it for me, but they didn't have it in stock.

You are supposed to dillute essential oil since they are SUPER concentrated. I use and am very familiar with essential oils and the only one that you could use pure is lavender. Essential oils can be amazimg but you have to do research on them because some can also be toxic and harmful, if not used correctly. Clove is oil is very strong and " hot oil" and must be very diluted. Tea tree oil is also very good but must be diluted as well.

I used clove oil undiluted on a sore under my tongue. It helped with numb the pain but soon I developed very painful swelling (ulcer like bumps) under my tongue. I have not been able to sleep or even talk for 4 days and it does not look any better. I'm never ever using undiluted Clove oil again. In fact this has really scared me about using essential oils.

I tried clove oil after a painful tooth extraction and now have a cluster of 8 mouth ulcers inside my mouth next to the extraction. Won't use again!

Seriously you need to use a carrier with it. Add some other oil then clove oil. Or add it too your wet toothbrush then toothpaste on top and brush. Otherwise it will burn.

Anbesol oil works a treat but don't over do it. Also my doctor told me eating pineapple helps, something in the enzymes (not tinned).

i agree with eve, at first i read comments saying that clove oil is great, so i popped to boots and got a bottle to try, used it possibly up to 6 times on the first day i brought it, and the next day i noticed my ulcer infact was bigger and more painful.

Clove oil numbed the pain, but the results of it made it worse. I'm thinking of trying anebesol instead, has anyone tried that before? if so, does it work?

I've also heard, lack of vitamin B12 is the result of ulcers. so in future I guess i'll keep my Vitamin B's up

Yes the pain goes for ages with clove oil, but avoid at all costs. The ulcer grows twice the size and I have developed more around it. The oil burns it, so actually keeps the user there longer! NO NO NO !!!

I used clove oil just now on my ulcer, it tasted discusting and burnt abit, plus it smells vile :-( but on the other hand I can't feel the pain of my ulcer anymore so all good so far I suppose.

I used to get 20 - 25 ulcers practically all the time. I have recently been diagnosed with crohnís disease and apparently, the mouth ulcers were a sympton of this. I know when my Crohnís is flaring as Iíll start to get ulcers again. But then when I take my crohnís meds the ulcers clear up...I still them but they only last a day which is HEAVEN!
A med that really worked for me was Adcortyl in Oralbase - really quite yucky in the mouth so I only used it at night but it did speed up the healing process.

Good luck

Blimey, I canít live without it, it seems to be the only thing that gets rid of the pain, and yes the pain is bad when first put on, but it soons stops and feels great for ages afterwards. I got it in Boots, and it didnít say anything about causing ulcers...makes you wonder though.

Also, the doctor has given me a mouthwash called Difflam which is also helping to ease the pain.

Iíve had them for 3 weeks now & they still donít seem to be going anywhere. Iím kinda fed up!

thanks for the warning, i really dont think its worth the pain of putting on the clove oil. its nasty. Ian, if i had 7 mouth ulcers id be lucky! sometimes i get up to 15 or 20 at a time. so it could be worse?!
ed 12 January 07

rick 10 January 07
i just tried clove oil and the pain when i put it on was almost unbearable, i almost started crying. thought i was going to pass out. the effect doesnít last that long either.
ed 10 January 07
i have tried this but it leaves a really horrible taste in my mouth how do you get rid of it?
bethany 5 January 07
Iíve tried the Boots mouth ulcer stuff yesterday and it hurt like hell when I put it on, after about 2 hours it felt great but today it all flaked off & theyíre hurting again so Iím not impressed.
Iíve also tried Anbesol gel & liquid, Bonjela, bicarbonate of soda, whiskey, and a few others but nothing has been better than the Clove Oil I bought yesterday. stops hurting instantly, donít know about itís healing qualities but for pain relief itís a winner.
