This is a helpful message board for a very painful condition. I think that it is more important to focus on preventing these ulcers from occuring in the first place. Of coarse this is difficult to nail down because you have to keep all other aspects of your life the same in order to really understand whether or not something new is indeed helping to prevent the ulcers from developing. I believe that it is definitely a combination of fatigue, stress, and diet that makes one more succeptible to getting ulcers. Therefore, it is clear that in order to prevent them one must try to get sleep, not be too stressed and find out what alergies they might have that contribute to ulcers breaking out. That said, I would really like to find out more about what can be taken as a pro active supplement to help fight against the possibility of ulcers developing. I have read above that flaxseed oil can help as well as brushin after every meal, but there must be more things that can be taken as supplements to help prevent these nasty beasts.

I found the answer for me. A doctor prescribed steroids or prednisone. Within 24 hours of the first dose my ulcers were already healing. Now I am having trouble with side effects but when I have 30 or more ulcers this is my anwser for now.

Nothing works for me but real meds from a doctor. Clobetasol Ointment. At first sign, dab it on and they never get to the super painful stage. I still get them on my lips, gums and tounge but at least I can rest assured I wonít be in as much pain as I have been in the past.

See my post from today titled, Itís real medication

I have been having mouth ulcers since I was a kid and I still donít know what helps cure them. I was worse when I was a kid...it had come to a point when almost every month Iíd have an ulcer. I went to a doctor and she said my white blood cells level was higher than normal and that could be the cause but she wasnít definite about it. Anyways, over the years, the frequency decreased but it would still come and go...sometimes so bad that talking would be a problem. My biggest fear is one of these ulcers turning cancerous as it had happened to my uncle. He too frequently got mouth ulcers and there was one that didnít go away. He went to the doctor and it turned out to be cancerous. He got mouth cancer.

I still donít know what causes my mouth ulcers and I have no definite pattern as to when they will come as well. My mom says its because of constipation too (I think itís an Indian thing) but Iím not sure if thats really the case. However, I do think that body heat makes a big difference. I am having one right now thatís right next to my wisdom tooth and its PAINFUL. I can barely open my mouth. I have put salt on it but I donít fee any change. On the other hand, Listerine did help numb the pain but only temporarily. There a few ointments that have helped...there was one that was particularly good but I just cant remember the name..it was bought over the counter.

I am new to this board, allow me to intoduce myself...my name is Stephaine I am a relatively healthy woman who is 36 years old and from New York. A few days ago I started to feel very ill with a terrible headache and then out of no where a small camker formed on my tongue after that another..now in total I have five very, very painful ulcers two on my tongue and I have a huge one in the inside of my lower lip smack in the middle and two clustered on the upper left hand side of my gum. Let me agree that I have never in my life expereinced such pain. I went to the DR today who advised me that I had a viral infection running itís course through my body that was giving me a terrible headache that has been lasting for about a week now, fever of 101 for two days and swollen glands the size of golf balls along with a sore throat. All of these symptoms are a result of a seconday bacterial infection that formed in my body. The question is why? I have never suffered from these and my DR explained that stress is and has been a culprit in me being and feeling so ill. I was givin Amoxicillin 500mgs to take for 10 days and Hydrocodone 750mg for the god awful pain I have...in conjuntion I have been rinsing with salt water. I am unable to floss or brush my teeth....I tried for 2 min and the pain was unbearable. I have also always been very meticulous about my oral hygine bu flossing and brushing 2x a day. My question is why did I get this and how can I boost my immune sysytem so that I can deal with the stress in my life and not have to worry about getting sick like this. I must add that I also got my period at the onset of feeling sick and during my cycle I had it normally for four days it stopped strangely for two whole days and then it came back very light for another two...and this isnít normal for me. What can I do to safe gaurd my healh? Is there a good Muti Vitamin that I should be taking? Does Flax Seed and lysine actually work? and last but not least will the Amoxixillin help clear up these painful ulcers so I can go back to flossing and brushing my teeth. As of today Tuesday August 22nd I am in terrible pain looking to get better and remain healthy. I greatly appreciate any feed back and advice concerning this matter.
Thank You & Sincerely
Stephanie

I THINK THAT THERE IS NO REMEDY FOR these ULCERS.Alll the times I was scolded by my Guardians that I have constipation problems And this is causing the ulcers.but I donít think that this is the reason for ulcers. Now I had clearly underzstood what is the main cause.I have my ulcer period from Summer to statring winter season i.e, upto 5 months. And in winters I don;t have any of the ulcer problem.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I have who knows how many on my palette and around the outside for the teeth under the cheek on the right side, so lately Iíve been eating only on the left side, but itís so hard to remember, the pain sure reminds me though. I read the first entry at the top and tried it. H didnít say anything about PAIN, BURNING PAIN, but ya it is very painful. Itís like putting salt on a open wound. YIKES! But weíll see if it helps. I sure hope so, itís been about a week now and itís rather frusterating only eating on one side of the mouth. I think it IS caused by stress for me though. Because I have been that. Anyway, thanks for your help. You can visit me at my blog too if you like. Itís found at: demarablog.com

I am finding that the prescriptions my doctor gave me are clearing up the ulcers rapidly. This is the 2nd day and theyíre not nearly as painful and are smaller. She prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide Dental paste which numbs the pain and Magic Mouthwash to lower the acidity and treat the ulcers. It makes the tears fly, but the dental paste soothes it. I had tried the salt water for over a week with no results. I had two ulcers underneath my lip over my top front teeth. I couldnít even talk without pain. Iíve still got to find a toothpaste that wonít irritate and I figure the carbonated drinks are history.

I have suffered from mouth ulcers for many years now, and remember on a couple of occasions when I was a child having the inside of my mouth covered in them. They really drain everything out of you. The only real thing I beleive to work is just to let them run thier course and die on thier own. I do use various methods to obtain relief during an attack but have not found a brilliant product as yet!!

Iíve developed this ulcer on palate - very painful. On doctorís advice, using saline wash and Kenalog in Orabase. Temporary relief and slow healing! Itís 4th day today. Any better idea or suggestions?

i have mouth ulcers badly before my period and other times when i am not well they flare up. I have noticed that the flaxseed oil and evening primose oil seems to help prevent the pre period ones.
I have mouth ulcers at the moment, - i didnt take any oil for a while, and also very stressed recently. The ulcers are not healing as fast usual and i feel like i have a flu with it all and feel sick. I noticed actually putting the flaxseed oil around my mouth seems to ease the pain a bit - maybe it coats them or something. I know this is not the way it needs to be used, its helping a wee bit anyway, i hope i remebre to take it each day later on, because it does seem to help prevent them.

i get ulcers all the time, i find brushing after every meal including light snacks helps, to prevent them and salt directly on the ulcers helps heal teh pain and tehy disappear faster. Ever scince i started brushing after every meal religiously i havent had an attack.. it is annoying though cas soemtimes it is difficult to find a nice clean place to brush you mouth...
i have tried salt water but it is no way near as effective as direct salt

Iíve just found this website, and having been plagued with mouth ulcers for approx. 20 years, it is interesting to note that people get these for numerous reasons, and the ĒcuresĒ that people have for ulcers.

I have tried to work out why I get mouth ulcers (I used to put it down to eating white bread, eating a lack of fresh green veg, or drinking Cremola Foam as a kid), and have tried numerous remedies such as rubbing toothpaste on it, and using mouthwashes to get rid of the ulcers.

I have worked out that my mouth ulcers always occur when I feel stressed or run down, and I have found that the most effective way of clearing up the mouth ulcers is to apply Bicarbonate of Soda directly to it. It is painful for a few seconds, however I understand that the Bicarbonate of Soda effectively cleans the wound, and within a day the ulcers are generally not as red or sore, and after a couple of days the ulcers are generally away.

Flaxseeds and flaxseed oil may help to:

- Lower cholesterol, protect against heart disease and control high blood pressure. Several studies indicate that flaxseed oil, as well as ground flaxseeds, can lower cholesterol, thereby significantly reducing the risk of heart disease. Flaxseed oil may also have a protective effect against angina (chest pain) and high blood pressure. In addition, a 5-year study done recently at Bostonís Simmons College found that flaxseed oil may be useful in preventing a 2nd heart attack. It may also help prevent elevated blood pressure by inhibiting inflammatory reactions that cause poor circulation and artery-hardening plaque.

- Counter inflammation associated with lupus and gout. Omega-3 fatty acids appear to limit the inflammatory reaction associated with these conditions. In cases of lupus, flaxseed oil not only reduces inflammation in the joints, kidneys and skin, but also lowers cholesterol levels that may be elevated by the disease. Taking flaxseed oil for gout may lessen the often sudden and severe joint pain or swelling that is a symptom of this condition.

- Control constipation, hemorrhoids, diverticular disorders. Because they are high in soluble fiber, ground flaxseeds can help ease the passage of stools and thus relieve constipation, hemorrhoids and diverticular disease.

- Reduce cancer risk. The lignans in flaxseed appear to play a role in protecting against breast, colon, prostate, and perhaps skin cancer. In one study(1), prostate cancer patients who added about 3 heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily to their diet, had more slowly-dividing tumor cells and a greater rate of tumor cell death than men who did not follow such a diet, after about 5 weeks.

can anyone tell me what flaxseed oil is and where i can get it?
KC 3 August 06
Salty warm water, medicine, doctors, dentists dont fix 50 odd ulcers in your mouth.I suffer this many every couple of years and the only thing that will prevent them is flaxseed oil every morning and a good diet. if i get run down and can feel them coming on i really get into the flaxseed oil.

it might interest you to know that phenytoin 100mg daily can help oral ulcers heal faster than u can imagine. for most people, a significant improvement is seen at about five days after commencement of oral phenytoin!!!!! plus good oral hygeine to prevent infection and NSAIDs for pain releive
Dr Chris Nwaforji 24 July 06
Unfortunately its the oragel thats caused my ulcers. Will certainly give the salt a go,as iíve just eaten the best part of a tub of ice cream in an attempt to numb the pain
chris 24 July 06
i would say the best thing for ulcers are water, salt on the ulcer and ORAGEL!! Also dont drink acidy drinks.
With salt. Get a tissue and fold it to a small size then dampen it, put salt on the wet part of the tissue and place the salt side into your mouth against the ulcer. Do not leave on over night as it may dry up your mouth, salt will kill any germs and is a cheap yet effective way to heal ulcers.
