biting inside of cheeks while sleeping

I've been biting my cheeks ever since I can remember. I do it when I'm nervous or bored. I have also realized I do it in my sleep. I wake up with my cheeks all weird and uncomfortable. I have tried to stop but it is a continuous bad habit. I have heard that it can lead to oral cancer, mouth sores, and other bad side affects. I don't know what to do.

My left cheek was being bitten whilst grinding my teeth at night. It was constantly sore and my jaw and ear ached through the day. My dentist has been concerned about the sore area on my cheek for about a year, let alone the grinding down of teeth. Finally I agreed something was wrong and they took a cast of my top teeth for a nightguard. This is a clear plastic shield that fit your teeth perfectly that you wear for sleep. First few nights it felt weird and I woke up when I was grinding. I have been wearing it a week now and guess what? No more grinding of teeth, no more sore and swollen cheek and no more jaw ache.

I bite down so hard on my sleep I wake up with a jolt and the pain is blinding. I've been doing it for roughly a year. There's a painful ulcer on my inner right cheek. An it even when it heals it still seems to protrude slightly so if I bite slightly off center I can catch it. An Oh my God it hurts. It's probably an inch long by an eighth inch wide an depending on how much I've been biting it it can stick out approximately a quarter inch. I dread it every night. I hate sleeping with anything in my mouth like a guard. I don't know what to do.

An impressive share! I've just ferawrdod this onto a colleague who had been conducting a little homework on this. And he actually bought me breakfast due to the fact that I discovered it for him lol. So allow me to reword this . Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending time to talk about this subject here on your web page.

My job has become very stressful the last month or so and I've been jaw clenching and now biting my cheeks apparently when I sleep. I gargled tonight w/salt water, ate some ramen soup and took ibuprofen. It's helping, but seems to be a long process. Anyone know of good relaxation techniques I can try before going to sleep?

Hi. Go speak to your dentist and ask them to make you a gum shield - they can take a cast of your lower jaw and make you one that fits perfectly. I did that and it cost about £30 GBP. It made a huge difference to the ulcers I get on the side of my tongue - probably 80% less. I still get ulcers in other places but it does make life a little more bearable. Give it a go.

I also have a history of clenching and grinding...and now I am biting my cheeks. I am in a very stressful situation that I've been unable to remedy. I am exercising, eating right and praying so hoping to remedy things. I have found that swishing colloidal silver in the mouth for 6 to 10 minutes at a time will relieve the problem and make the soreness completely recede. I did this before and stopped so I chewed cheeks and they came back. I have just done the swishing now for 3 days and I have complete relief and no problems eating. I swish about 3 times a day. It may seem like a long time but I just swish while I have my shower or I am doing something else..then spit out. I am also taking some colloidal silver. Hope this helps.

I have been biting the inside of my cheeks for years now but right now it is at it's worst. My doctor told me yes it's cause from stress. It hurts so bad I can barely eat and now my tongue is swollen too. My dentist tried to get my insurance to cover a mouth guard and they turned me down. Any other suggestions on what to do?

This happens to me quite often. Its probably due to stress. I'm sore in my mouth right now because I bit inside of my cheek, part of my lip too in my sleep. Its so hard for me to eat, do anything. It hurts to laugh. Ice cream cools and sooths it for a while but it doesn't last long. I try holding my breath to lessen the pain but no one can do that for long.
I need something to make my mouth biting problem stop.

Try to massage your facial muscles especially under jaw/top of neck area. You may find that it is sore and massaging the muscles will help. That helped me the first time this happened.

I have the same problem. You can get a mouth guard for MMA that helps a bit as well. I don't believe this is caused by stress, I think it's caused by stress. Sleep without a pillow and you won't do it any more. Keep your hands away from your face and lay on your back.

to Cheryl I hope you have been able to find a dentist who can make one from the original "goop" they are made from. My life was transformed in this custom approach

I bit my cheeks while I was awake, and I recently do it in my sleep for some reason. I have been very stressed out, that may be the problem. I woke up this morning with huge bit marks in my mouth. They don't hurt very much but I can feel them with my tongue and it takes a pretty long time for them to heal and then I do it again!!

Well I bite my cheeks at night, and I was told it was because of stress. Try to reduce stress in your life and youíll see a difference. Also, salt does nothing but dry up the ulcer. It may seem like itís helping, but it just irritates it. I was told by my doctor recently that if you gargle hydrogen peroxide (very diluted with water!) then itíll help...

Iíve been told that i grind my teeth by my dentist which is the possible reason why my jaw aches all the time causing me headache ear pain, i have noticed though with ulcers in my case that rubbing salt on the afflicted wound helps in the healing process, for me any way. The ulcer once applied with salt will turn white in colour, excuse my description it will shrivel up like a slug and healing process will commence. Bonjela is another usual means of alleviating the pain but the pain of the ulcer returns with vengeance, i think that salt is useful but it burns for a short while and relieve comes after, i would suggest not to keep swallowing the salt as this will increase your blood pressure

There is another gimmick to stop from grinding the teeth. It was invented by a dentist, and fits on the front teeth. It takes advantage of a reflex that keeps us from biting our tongues between the front teeth. There is even a website about the device, and it seems to be gaining wide approval from the dental profession, and Iíd be surprised to learn it might also be useful for preventing mouth ulcer! http://www.nti-tss.com/
