Peroxyl Mouthwash (Colgate)

My hygienist told me to use Peroxyl and after using once a day for 3 days I now have several sores in my mouth. I thought it was supposed to heal, my mouth has never been in such a state.

Peroxyl use caused a white "burn" mark on lower lip which was diagnosed as "ackintic chelitis" and treatment will be liquid nitrogen.
I think I just overused it and was aware of the burning sensation on the lip.

Hi, I've been overusing ( I just read
the precautions )using Peroxyl and it made things in my mouth look real bad. I saw the dentist and he thinks I have cancer which I'm getting checked out in 2 days. I stopped using Peroyl and my sores are disappearing and the swelling has gone down. The pain has almost disappeared as well. Please read the precautions

I have been getting similar sores in the mouth as some of you for about 3 years now. They usually occur in the same exact place as the last breakout. My cheeks, gums, botom of my tongue, roof of my mouth breaks out with ulcers. I usually can not eat or drink anything for days if not weeks. I can not afford the hospital anymore have tried them several times and because I'm poor and have no health insurance. I have taken it into my own hands and started using apple cider vinegar, with salt and warm water as a mouth wash. Believe me the pain can be untollerable but if you can get through the initial 10-20 seconds of burning and the nasty taste you will be cured of all ulcers in a couple of days your mouth will be ulcer free if not I gaurantee 100% relief.

Curasept is a blue mouthwash that doesn't stain your teeth and works.

Jb you should be following your dentist/periodontist's instructions during the healing phase. Colgate Peroxyl (best the Alcohol-free version) is also a "wound irrigant", but most dentists/periodontists would be recommending a chloexidine based rinse for the week after surgery. I don't believe that Listerine would make much difference in your case. By the way, healing gum is fairly ugly at the best of times, we refer to healing gum to look like a "wet scab" sore because of the wetness inherent in the oral environment. By now I suspect your gums are improving...
hope this helps.

Can this mouthwash peroxyl be used after gum grafting. Underneath the plaster it isn't pretty. I have been using diluted listerine. But both the donor site ( palate ) and the actual graft area seem slow to heal. Or may I am just inpatient for the healing process.

Do I need to dilute it before using it or I can just use it directly from the bottle itself ?

I had horrible thrush outbreaks three times last year while taking the corticosteroid, Prednisone, 60mg/day. The absolute distinction between any "normal" mouth ulcer and what I perceived to be "thrush" is the difference between a paper cut and a thousand paper cuts. My husband described his "thrush" to me this Christmas season (2010), and on Xmas morn, there was a sealed bottle of Colgate Peroxyl on the dining room table...neither of us had purchased this unusual (to us) mouthwash, however it did soothe and protect his severe ulcers until we could make it the a diagnosing Doc for an rX of Nystatin Wafers.

Thanks for the 2010 miracle, my Lord, and we will write back whenever the "thrush" self-diagnostic is confirmed this week at the PCP appt.

I have had horrible mouthulcers all my like, I will soon be 50. However, as long as I remember to eat yogurt everyday I don't have any problems.

I also got thrush after using Peroxyl three times a day for one week. It was great for stopping the problem I took it for but it gives me thrush so I cant take it anymore and the previous problem returns.

I have been getting mouth ulcers for 30 years. I can feel your pain. I have one on my tongue right now. two on my gums and two on lip. The most i have had at one time is 10. If one more person tells me try oralgel or something of the like i am going to punch them. I take hydrocodone for the pain. It last longer than three minutes unlike any topical crap. Doctors dont understand the pain so dont ask for hydrocodone for mouth ulcers they will accuse u of selling it and write it in your file and u will never be able to get any for other reason. I would like to take a razor and cut 10 holes in their mouth and tell them to take two asprin and use this gel. When people have surgery in their mouth pain medicine is precrible because their is a wound in the mouth. Well to me ulcers are a wound. These ulcers have affected my life so much and made me moody. They make me an ass .I donít know how many times i have heard u dont love me cause u dont hardly kiss me anymore.
I could go on forever but i will stop now.
p.s. i have to drink coke so i can talk and feel relief. I understand everything u just said.

One caution on using Peroxyl: Donít overuse. I really think it helps with the pain (lasts over an hour for me), but on one occasion I rinsed with it 5 or 6 times per day for at least 3 days and, although it helped my canker sores it caused a mild case of thrush. (The peroxide in Peroxyl kills both the good and bad bacteria in your mouth.) The thrush disappeared within a day of discontinuing the peroxyl.

Hi Tanya, I went through a phase of using Peroxyl, I found that it did provide some relief, but after a while I was of the opinion that it was impeding the recovery. Do let us know how you get on.

Iím a 22 year old who has had these all my life. Most of my family and relitives get canker sores. I found a magic mouthwash of my own. When I was in highschool and had braces that irratated and caused canker sores, my dentist tole me to try Peroxyl. Now I use it for my normal canker sores. Nothing else has made me feel like I could eat anything I want after using ever since I gave up pepsi, becasue of acid reflux. I used to drink pepsi whenever I had cankersores adn wanted to eat because the bubbles (carbination) seems to numb the pain.
