I have had painful canker sores my entire life. The only thing I has ever helped was and is Debacterol!

Severe sufferer experience and advice. I have suffered severe mouth ulcers for years and have tried almost everything including a internal gastosrophy camera check. In the end I have realised that certain foods and mouth washes can upset the balance of bacteria which naturally protect the tongue and gums. Strangely doctors didnt mention that to me. Certain toothpastes eg sodium lauryl sulphate and mouth washes especially with alcohol should be avoided. Certain foods also eg pineapple kills bacteria in the mouth so if you are susceptable to ulcers avoid. Try cutting out certain foods eg chocolate for a period to check if they are a trigger. In case you are missing out on certain vitamins take multivitamin. Lycine and B complex are especially important. Work on reducing stress as it is a big factor and having ulcers causes a vicious stress cycle. Biting on the gums always resulted in ulcers for me so make sure teeth and dentures are not damaging gums. Iglu tabs and Bongela Complete provide temporary relief but are not really a cure. Kenalog in Orabase is a paste and the best healing relief and but can only be got online now which is difficult to understand. Mouth ulcers are soul destroying so dont give up searching, there are solutions to suit you.

Iím just experiencing my first ulcer and am at breaking point. Itís a huge ulcer on the inside of my right cheek and a smaller one on the left I cant eat or drink anything without it feeling like somebody has poured lemon and salt in an open wound I feel like I sound like Iím being dramatic but this is genuinely the worst pain Iíve had. My teeth also keep grazing the ulcers and itís horrendous. Iíve tried bonjella which is painful, kenalog which helps but feels gross and comes off relatively quickly. Iíve been prescribed a mouth rinse and take paracetamol and told it may take 3 weeks to heal. I feel so down as I donít think I can put up with it for any longer. I also took a day off work today as Iím in a call Center and constantly talking. I feel so silly for having a day off but Iím in agony. Just feel a little better knowing Iím not alone. Wouldnít wish this on anybody! Hope everybody is feeling better soon! X

Hi fellow sufferers. I havenít looked at the message board for a few weeks, as Iíve got nothing to contribute, except sympathy, which I give you all by the bucketfull! I find (as I may have mentioned before) that the only thing which helps me is Kenalog in Orabase (comes under various trade names, depending on where you live, but Orabase is the key word). I hate the feel of it in my mouth (sorry if Iím repeating myself) but it does help. I have always declared that my problem is caused by my tongue catching on my very uneven teeth and am now trying to convince my dentist that all I want is for him to take out all my teeth and give me dentures. I may still get ulcers, but at least I will be able to take my damned teeth out and give my tongue a chance to heal. May sound a bit drastic, but Iím 63 years old and have had mouth ulcers for as long as I can remember. Iíll let you know how I get on and give you all my best wishes.

Hi itís me again and I am off work with those dreaded mouth ulcers again. I have had to relent to take a course of steroids again and I am feeling very run down. I can only come to the conclusion that it tis my weak area and when I am under stress or run down my immune system breaks down and the mouth ulcers appear. Other people suffer from chest infections, Acne, sore throats, eczema etc. Iíll keep you posted if I discover anything as I am constantly researching. julia

I have suffered now for nearly five years and contrary to Julie, Sharon etc mine started just after I had my daughter and gradually got worse with my second pregnancy. I now have had them constantly since my son was born (18 months) ago. When one lot go another lot appear. I have 11 at the moment and one is about 9 mm wide. I too have been tested for everything and believe doctor is not interested in my condition as it is not life threatening (although may be if i decide pain is too much!!!. so glad i have found this website as other people underestimate the pain we go through. My conclusion is that some things work for some people and different things for others. Try everything and donít give up. I know I wonít. Thanks again for all the suggestions I am going to go out and try them all now. Sorry I have none of my own to add.

In the early 1970ís I was given a series of smallpox vaccinations by my physician. At the time it had been shown in some research to lessen the outbreaks of herpes simplex. The viruses of both are related and the increased immune reaction to the one also acted against the other. I received them every six months for 18 months and got tremendous relief. He then refused to continue with the treatment, stating that there had been some bad reactions to the vaccine and that there was no clear proof that it worked. It worked for me. It was the only respite I had from the cursed ulcers in 15 years that I was plagued by them.

It is very comforting to know I am not the only person to suffer from these ulcers! Having been going back and forth to hospital for over a year the only suggestions I have is to avoid TOMATOES, ORANGES, FIZZY DRINKS and CRISPS. A course of Tetracycline as a mouth wash appeared to clear mine up for 8 weeks which is extremely well going.Corsodyl mouthwash also speeds up healing.

I have just added a new message very similair to the last 3.Its nice to hear that there are other paople who suffer the same as me.I know exactly what their going through.I suffer with them on a monthly basis to which i think is hormonal.I have tests and tried every product going, the only thing that works is oral steriods.
sara 7 March 02
I also suffer regular outbursts of ulcers and as you Julia and Sharon I didnít get them with either of my pregnancys either, I thought it could be hormone related bu Iíve had no answers yet! Nobody seems to know what to do, Iíve had times with the nasty things when all Iíve been able to do is wash soluble pain relief around in my mouth( causing great pain) to try to loosen my mouth enough to eat something, oftet only soup through a straw. The consultant recently gave me some steroid based soluble medication aswell, I find that they do reduce the inflamation and pain, but unfortunatley do not stop them occuring again. I also found that I was very low in Ferritin which is the bodys natural supply of Iron, I want to follow this up and perhaps try Iron tablets, Iíll let you know of the outcome. As you did Sharon Iím going to seek homeopathic remedies,I have some info about a Chinese herbalist that also specialise in acupuncture. I will try anything now theyíve made my life a misery for long enough, and always seem to really flaire up when Iím due to go anywhere nice!

Julia Arechiga - I really feel for you. My history starts pretty similar to yours, but thank god I have not suffered the same way in every respect. I started getting mouth ulcers when I was about 12 years old. I never got one at a time - alway 3 or more together. No doctor could seem to help. Zinc deficiency was mentioned but efforts in that direction did nothing. I suffered for years without trying to get any other help. I too found that I was completely ulcer free whilst I was pregnant and for a good 8 months or more after the birth of my son. Then they came back just as bad as before. Eventually I thought why am I putting up with this - if it was my son suffering I would be trying everything to get him cured. I went a very good homeopath and after a couple of months of sessions and remedies had a period without ulcers for appxoximately 1 year. I am currently suffering from 5 large ulcers but have a bad cold, generally run down and my period is due any day so it really didnít surprise me that they made visit. However I am hoping it is just a blimp. If they do start to become a regular feature of my life again I would definately go back to the homeopath.

I have been a sufferer of mouth ulcers for 17 yrs. I have tried everything ranging from traditional treatment to a holistic approach. I have been seen by numerous specialists and remained a mystery to all of them. I have had to be admitted into hospital on numerous occasions when they have been so bad I had to be fed with a drip as I couldnít even take water orally. Incidentally the only time I have been free of the dreaded ulcers for any period of time was during my pregancy and for 1yr after the birth of my son who is now 7yrs old. I have been to see a hormone specialist and still no luck. I have had all the medical tests and I am not deficient in anything and keep getting told that everything is healthy. I have tried exclusion diets and courses of drugs but still no answers. I also have in the last 8 yrs become allergic to the sun. I get weeping blisters on my chest and back after prolonged exposure to the sun. The latest diagnosis has been erythema multiforma but I am scepticle about that as the treatment given did not make one bit of difference. I have also had a biopsy which was very unpleasant but again no results. I am currently trying hormone patches in the 2nd half of my cycle and I have noticed a very slight improvement but it hasnít been long enough yet to draw any conclusions. The only relief I get from them is taking a course of steriods which I have learnít to manage myself and they clear up within days of taking them. This however doesnít give me a long term soloution and I am worried about the side effects of taking them so I try not to rely on them to much but sometimes it is the only answer. I am really desperate and would love to hear from anyone who has had similar history to myself.

I often suffer from large mouth ulcers because I accidentally bite my lip or cheek when eating. I also get them once a month as a result of PMT. I have tried all sorts of remedies to relieve the irritating pain and to make them heal faster and Iíve found that nothing soothes them better than Bonjela - itís wonderful stuff when massaged into the ulcer correctly. I was also told that rubbing raw garlic over the ulcer before bedtime helps it to heal quickly. I tried it on an ulcer that refused to budge for over a week and the next morning it had reduced to half itís size - something my ulcers never do and Iíve been suffering from them for 28 years! I donít know if thereís any truth in the garlic theory, but it seemed to work for me!

I am wondering if eating too many tomatoes at this time of year helped to trigger my first tongue ulcer. What do you think?
Catherine 15 August 01
Keith you try putting aluminum potassium sulphate on yours first and let us know how you get on. Having used it on cuts i think i would rather put up with the pain.
dave 15 August 01
What about putting salt straight on to the ulcer,i have 6 at the moment and i am also pregnant,so i need to try natrual stuff.Any help appreciated! Thanks
marea 10 August 01
Has anyone tried aluminum potassium sulphate as recommended by a lady writing in the Telegraph. Its the stuff that wet shavers use to staunch razor cuts so it should be pretty good on delicate mouth ulcers! Whos brave enough to try first?

ĒI even put warm salt water in water pik and on very slow speed, cleaned mouthĒ What is this Ruuf ?
Dom Walton 13 July 01
The warm salt water rinse does help...I even put warm salt water in water pik and on very slow speed, cleaned mouth - that is soothing. These things definitely interfere with many ĒnormalĒ activities...
Ruuf 12 July 01
stress ii a major contributor to oral problems, stress work/home money problems also. Try rinsing your mouth with plain salted water and keep amy from the candy.

Just knowing that Iím not the only person who has this occasional misery of mouth ulcers - and that weíve all arrived at pretty much the same conclusions about the causes and cures makes - me feel much, much better!

Hi. I use acortdyl too, but I find it annoying that to use it effectively I am restricted to eating and drinking at set times to avoid washing it away. After about 3 years of using the stuff, I still find it difficult to get just the right amount on in the right place. Does anyone know of any trick that gaurantees it goes on correctly.

Hi Nicola, congratulation on being the first person to use the message board... and only 57 minutes after it went live ! I hope it will be of help to people.
Dom Walton 21 May 01
I think mouth washes are bad for you as they rid the mouth of the good germs as well as the bad. Same may apply to toothpaste. I use acortdyl in orabase too. Another cause (in women) may be hormonal and linked to the menstrual cycle.

Well here it is a brand new message board, generously hosted by Useful Companies at Pinewood Studios.
